Lore

Does the fact of night elf magi strike anyone else as odd? As far as the lore goes? Isn't that how we got blood elves, or did I completely miss the point, there?

""Although the mighty kaldorei proved themselves able of putting a decisive halt to the Legion's onslaught thus ending the war and arguably saving the world, both their civilization and the world itself were shattered as a result, a difficult paradox and burden the remaining kaldorei live with. Left with nothing else than their lives, grief and sorrow, the night elves withdrew to their ancestral forests of Ashenvale and isolated their culture from the rest of Azeroth for nearly ten millenia, renouncing magic and becoming devoted wholly to the natural cycle of the world they had almost led to ruin. Ever since, the kaldorei's ways have revolved around an intimate connection to the natural forces, animistic powers and the worship of their mysterious moon goddess, Elune. The night elves now stand as a people who are both highly spiritual and pragmatic, an often sophisticated paradox, and are possessed with a deeply seated desire to find their solace. It is thus no surprise that they have become great healers and will aid creatures and friendly, kind beings partly due to their nature and perhaps partly because it helps them find their solace in reconciling for mistakes of the past.""

They're not kaldorei, they're high elves.

There was a small intro quest in WotLK to show their return. Initially, the arcane reforger in Stormwind was a high elf as well.

""The night elves, or kaldorei (sometimes misspelled as "kal'dorei") are "Children of the Stars" in their native tongue of Darnassian. They have a long and fascinating history. Native to the western continent of Kalimdor, the night elves ended a long period of seclusion at the end of the Third War and became members of the Alliance. ""

As far as I can tell, you still can only pick night elves, on the alliance side, not high elves, right?

As I understand it, the Night Elf mages are actually Shen'dralar, or students of the Shen'dralar that are integrating back into Night Elf society.

The book Wolfheart had a couple of sections where the Shen'dralar emissaries are in talks with Malfurion Stormrage about being allowed to return.

I believe there has also been a couple of articles over at Wow Insider about it too.

Ekat.
