When WoW first came out, I decided each race was akin to a real-world culture.

The Orcs? Totally Goths - Ostrogoths, Visigoths, etc. I found a website that collects names, and it has a section on "Goth" names. I use those. :)

and the website is http://www.20000-names.com

Is there any site like that for belfs? xD i would like to know.

Thanks :)

I always use Welsh for BElf names. :) Or Italian.

Unfortunately, you can't put spaces in your names in this game, or "Gormuck the Gruesome" could make an appearance. I used an alternate spelling of "Lok'tar" for my hunter, and "Zugzug" has the problem of encountering players familiar with Ringo Starr's performance in the movie "Caveman"

I always envisioned Orcs as very "Caveman" like, so names with lots of gutteral sounds would work well.

Never have I seen the Orc phenotype perceived as being Gothic. You've opened my eyes to another way of thinking.

I would typically name mine some form of a grunt: Ugh, Bah, Gurgle, Pffft, etc.

It's not really the phenotype - that's genetics for general racial physical attributes. But when you look at the cities and structures of the orcs, they have a very "barbarian" feel to them. The best known groups of "barbarians" are the Mongols (too nomadic), the Goths, and the Vikings.

Vikings use a nordic nomenclature, which I've always used for Dwarves, because they also had an affinity for heavy drinking, bad singing, big hammers, and the Smith being an important figure.

The Goths, on the other hand? Remember the opening battle in "Gladiator"? Those were Goths. Visigoths, I'm fairly certain, but could be wrong. Pretty much any of the Germanic tribes of the time were some form of Goth. They used an old form of German for their names, largely, and tended towards warlordism - the strongest in any band being the leader.

By phenotype I meant just that - the physical attributes that one would compare with that of Gothic times, if any race resembled them, I would have to say the Undead - after all the plague and disease of that era.

Edit: AHH, on second observation: a reference to the Goth people, not the gothic era, silly me :p
