Quests or Maps

Ok... I'm trying to find out once and for all since i'm coming closer to moving onto my next stage or work, but so many people are complaining about quests not working 100%.

What do "YOU" want first, working quests.. or Map split into it's own addon with no extras (the start of modularization).

antiquada 10-05-12 04:38 PM

Quests please

I can't progress through the game if Quests are not working. The map is working great as is.

timmarc18 10-05-12 05:53 PM

I can live with the maps the way they are. Its the quest searching that gets annoying.

jc2470 10-05-12 06:11 PM

eh maps work fine for the most part, its the quest that are the problem, dont have much of a need for a map if im not doing quest although it is nice.

crazzzzi 10-05-12 06:22 PM

quests please!

Zakdarkelf 10-05-12 06:59 PM

Quests, please. I'm so lost without that!

tranthias 10-05-12 08:22 PM

Yea, I'm in same boat with quests on map. Sometimes it shows sometimes it doesn't, but I use alt+l then show for wows and its still doesn't work. Been using carbonite since 1st released, and since its new ownership, I'm hanging in there. Things take time when someone takes over a mod, and I can't think of many that would take on such a project. If people post issues, loc, zones, problems etc. it should help the new developer hopefully to resolve some issues.

There are so many fans of this addon, and not many no how or what information to give that could help. I'm in that same situation, and don't post. I too was a paid subscriber, and feel any contribution helps keep this website going, so no out of pocket to the new owner. With time I feel this addon will be at 100% again, thanks to such a loyal fan, and someone who can and willing to keep carbonite alive. Thanks for at least having the minimap working, and at times showing where to go in the new mop zones for quests, not always but still nice to have.

Thank you so much
:banana::banana::banana:

bigsleepy121 10-05-12 09:43 PM

i vote quest

if its not to much trouble i to would like questing. thanks for all ur hard work :banana::banana::D:D:D:):):)

Finding Party Members on Maps vs Raid Members

Quests! I'm a wow newbie and carbonite makes getting around in wow sooo awesome... so thank you for taking it over and fixing it.... along the lines of questing... i cannot see my party members on either the carbonite or wow minimaps and my party-mates want me to get rid of carbonite because they are tired of telling me to fly west, then north, etc to get to them... i can see raid members on the map but not party members and i cannot find a setting that might control this... any chance that this is a personal problem of my own (that is fixable by me)? ... or is it something that needs to be fixed someday?

Thank you for your awesome dedication and work Rythal!

tinyu 10-05-12 10:03 PM

WoW If your so dependant on Carbonite for its quests that you CANNOT quest with out it, I suggest you quit WoW now seriously.

IMHO Start the modularization.

Rythal 10-05-12 10:56 PM

I was silently hoping it would be maps, because I think that's going to be 10x easier to do then tearing apart the entire questing system. For all I know it might of been except maps works fine, quests don't ... so everyone coming to the forum right now is coming for quests :P

If i could figure out why breadtrail / completed quests won't track in the tracker I bet it would swing back the other way.

We'll see where it stands when I get back sunday night.

ssfoso 10-05-12 11:43 PM

Maps

There are sooooo many quest addons and the blizz ui for questing, but i cant stand the stock maps for the life of me. tomtom is great and all but its not the same being able to right click set waypoint, and the google style maps. So Maps first IMHO.:D

Helvira 10-05-12 11:51 PM

Maps :D

Maps please! There is no other addon out there, and I have tried every one I could find, that lets me set waypoints!

In all honesty mate finish what you've started, don't stop half way through cause you might regret it later.

The quests can wait until after you've got the maps working 100% once they are done THEN start on the quests.

Might even be easier to start the quest stuff from scratch?

tinawie 10-06-12 02:46 AM

I would say maps, as a work around for missing quests I'm using the blizz quest list (alt-l) then look on the blizz map from there to find the missing ones

jarda128 10-06-12 04:01 AM

i prefer maps ,i think it is more important than quests, because i use zygor guide on questing ..
but without maps , i cant set waypoints, which is more important then quest tracking (although the blobs makes life more easier)...
on other side afaik the maps is working good enough for me right now ..

Xcari 10-06-12 05:56 AM

For me, the maps are working well enough. I always appreciate questing help. I hope you make the decision based on which you consider most helpful to you in the grand scheme of your overall work on Carbonite. Thank you very much for taking on this huge project.

gOOvER 10-06-12 06:52 AM

Why making Quests working. Add a API to existing Addons . So Maps Shoud be first.

Chmee 10-06-12 07:39 AM

I wasn't going to say anything because at first there were so many votes for 'quests'. But since there are actually some others who want maps first, I'll jump on that bandwagon. In the end, though, Rythal, do whatever will work best for you.

ynkeesluvr 10-06-12 08:03 AM

My vote is for maps. I can work with the Blizz quest log (alt+L works for me) for now but would REALLY like my Carbonite map to be up to snuff and functioning properly.
Rythal, since you have SO much to work on, personally I would work on the easiest things first and get them off your plate and then tackle the more challengeing parts. Just my opinion. :)

jeruku 10-06-12 10:24 AM

Map

People want good quest data but they won't have that if there's no place to show it.

There's no point in having a canvas if you have no paint. I honestly have no use of the map if I don't have the quests, period.

moondoggy 10-06-12 11:38 AM

I say maps /w enemy player detection!

Xiyn 10-06-12 01:24 PM

Maps, Please for the love of all that's good and sane in the world. I cannot stand the default maps, they're an eyesore and make finding my way around all but impossible without the ability to zoom, set waypoints and resize. (Using mapster for now, but its just not the same)

I use wow-pro+tom tom for my questing, but the map... /shiver

lasaia 10-06-12 02:28 PM

Both features are important, but I think questing should be a priority at the release of an expac as people are leveling their army of alts.

Elizerain 10-06-12 04:16 PM

Maps

First thing is thank you for all the work u are doing Rythal..:) I am also lost without Carbonite. I would say to work on maps. Maps are very important for any game eventhough I voted for quests. :oI want to change my vote for Maps.:o

Elizerain

DanComputerX 10-06-12 05:54 PM

Maps

I can use WoW Pro for quests; I don't have a substitute for the Carbonite maps.

But do whatever you prefer. If this isn't fun for you then I get nothing :-)

txamethyst 10-06-12 09:11 PM

i'm going with the majority - maps are usable as-is, even with problems

while we can progress through a zone on our own, proper quest tracking helps immensely.

thank you ;)

pqee 10-07-12 03:08 AM

My vote is for maps. The majority of people have always asked for the maps to be a standalone addon. Then you started working on one. Why change that all of a sudden?

The only reason people want quests is because of the xpac. As time passes while you work on them, the priority for it will fade. There are also many other quest tracking addons. There is still nothing like the Carbonite maps yet and people have been waiting for one since Carbonite came out.

AnthonyK 10-07-12 06:57 AM

If your talking priority, I'd say the maps. Especially if it means getting rid of the big black mini-map (the non-transparent circle) in some places. But I'd hate to see carbonite change what it was. I'd like it to keep all of it's features. That's why I love it so much.

Lelandki 10-07-12 07:19 AM

My Vote - Maps.

As to Quests....I am not sure what the issues people keep talking about. I have no issues with the quest in Carbonite. I am able to find what I need. If a quest comes up (been a few) with Not in Database, then I flash back to my early years of playing WOW (ya I am one of the few here that has played Beta till now) and just figure it out. Read the quests, they tell you what to do. Come on, use that thing above your shoulders you cover with a hat. :D:D

Rythal, this can not be said more, thanks for all the help you have put into this.

Your first comment wouldn't be linked with your desire for maps first would it? :D

Goranth 10-07-12 10:40 AM

Awesomest map bug to date. Logged in fying in Org. but according to Carb I was somewhere between Azeroth and Outland on that old switch-between map. LOL Zoomed all the way out and in and it become Org again, but it was worth a chuckle.

That said, flawless Map is the most useful. Between common sense and the Alt+L/Alt+M for backup, I am surviving with the quests as is. The map bugs are bugging me the most.

Thanks Rythal for considering our input! I also echo the sentiment though, that whatever you prefer or have had most progress in should be your path. We want our remaining volunteer Dev to be happy and interested LOL:banana:

WeaveDiva 10-07-12 11:13 AM

for me, the map bugs are kinda minor...having to go to wowhead or whatever to figure out where the hades something is supposed to be when i don't even know what zone the quest ends is tiresome, so i would love quest info first! as much as i like exploring and just playing the game, it takes much longer to level stuff when you have to spend lots of time hunting for your quests!

love all the improvements...keep up the great work :)

Hanter 10-07-12 11:21 AM

Id like to see the maps cause then i could possibly be able to know where the heck i am in pandaria without having to look at the wow default map all the time.

balynevil 10-07-12 01:38 PM

Vote - Maps Please

Honestly, the map is what made this addon great. Without the maps, you can just cobble up a few other questing / navigation adds ons and get most of the functionality that Carbonite has. Heck, as frustrating as it is, the standard blizz quest log is fine. Just add Lightheaded + TomTom and you are pretty much good to go on quests. Once QuestHelper is back online, that will be all I need for questing.

Carbonite maps were the most awesome mapping UI change of all and would love to have it back. Just being able to scroll the maps, zoom in/out, easily set way points and paths, change map zise on the fly, auro hiding in combat, etc... everything else the addon did was just icing on the cake.

Temptress 10-07-12 01:45 PM

I vote maps, most of us are already lvl 90 and if you're working on another toon then you're already familiar with the quests.

dhjohn 10-07-12 01:53 PM

I vote quests.
Mainly because my computer can handle carbonite as is, but quests are very helpful.

Also, those voting maps because you want maps improved, that is not what Rythal said he was doing. He said he would split it into its own addon, not make imrovements to what is there. That would probably come after splitting it up.
(If I am wrong and Rythal does plan to improve it, never mind on that part...)

Temptress 10-07-12 01:58 PM

What I understand is that Rythal plans to modularize carbonite starting with the maps section as the basic core of which all the other modules will rely on. I vote maps so he can begin the modularization process, fixing quests at this time will just slow down the whole project.

elpumpo 10-07-12 03:02 PM

maps or quests

MAPS...above all else. The most unique thing about Carbonite is its maps and minimap. No other addon offers maps and minimaps this detailed or this good. There are many addons offering quests, both free and for sale. Please make the maps your priorty and please get the minimap back on line...........thank you, wywy

Nimhfree 10-07-12 03:57 PM

I vote for maps simply because there are other addons that can do other aspects, and if one were to work on something novel it would be maps. Once that is done, people can vote on other aspects and most likely someone will chime in and say "but that can be handled by addon Foo" and then a lovely debate can ensue about whether it would be better to have addon Foo integrate better with the new Carbonite maps or whether the module that covers the abilities of addon Foo needs to be updated, etc.

Choonstertwo 10-08-12 03:36 AM

Thank you for all the work you're doing Rythal.

Personally, my vote goes to fully functioning maps (I don't mind if they're a separate AddOn or not). The map already works very well; but some Pandaria zones have separate maps for certain subzones (e.g. Greenstone Quarry in the Jade Forest), these cause your position on the zone map to be wrong.

Zarggg 10-08-12 06:49 AM

In all honesty, I'm perfectly fine using Blizzard's own quest tracking system, now that they've included their own map blobs. :P

I like the map system in Carbonite, though. If there was a maps-only "light" version, I'd probably just use that.

elpumpo 10-08-12 02:20 PM

Maps or Quests

MAPS for sure should have top priority, to me its a "no brainer". There are tons of Quests programs available, including WOW's own program, both free and for sell. But, I ask you, is there any map program even remotely comparable to carbonite ( including their mini map which lights up the mines, fishing pools, herbs, etc.)?..NO there is not.....maps. maps, maps..please RY. Thank you very much for your hard and dedicated work on this great program RY.

Mortauk 10-08-12 03:11 PM

I voted for quests. I Just wanna say this... I really appreciate you asking and although I'm sure you may be sick of it... thanks for all the work!

huntedknight 10-08-12 11:39 PM

I voted Maps as I already have an addon for the quests ... "Dugi Guides" so having a specific map addon seperated would be awesome !!

WhaleTune 10-09-12 03:04 AM

Map and Quests IS Carbonite

Maps and Quests IS Carbonite; one without the other is another product entirely.

Seriously, we need quests working. Watered down projects are a thing of the future (as in maps only) and should rather easily be garnered from total project work (as in a subset of).

Please get the quests running...as the votes are showing in favor of.

Thanks! Nice work so far...I can imagine it is quite a job weeding through all the old code. :)

Also, might I suggest a Kickstarter project for this...so you can afford to bring in other programmers to really clean up the Carbonite project, improve it, and take out a lot of the mumble-jumble coding to make it easier for YOU to update too. Most importantly, to move along the development more rapidly. But best of all, you not putting the entire load on your own shoulders. :)

I also would rather have the maps fixed first. Then you can do the hard part which is the Quests.
One without the other is useless IMO. But need the maps first.

Inmunda 10-12-12 11:36 AM

carbonite map is unique, map plis

HamarSkald 10-14-12 06:54 AM

I use both features extensively and would love to see both working. I'm not really interested in stand-alone parts of Carbonite.

BTW, just want to add my thanks for taking over and all the hard work you've been putting into Carbonite.

Cerridwenns 10-14-12 02:07 PM

As a player that has played since late BC and played the Cata and Pandaria betas, the maps are the biggest thing to me. I have had to do plenty of questing with nothing but the default blizz UI and while the quest log and tracking isn't that bad by any means, their maps are absolutely horrid. Questing isn't that hard as long as you read the quest and take a few seconds to think about what it tells you.

DHubert 10-15-12 08:13 AM

The problem is both maps and questing is interconnected. The maps are a joy to work with being that you can resize and zoom and set waypoints on them. However, the quest blob that are placed on the Carbonite map and the quest points and question marks are equally as important. I am not sure which is weighing more heavily.

IMHO the maps slightly edge out questing only because there are other options. There are free add ons for quest info as well as guides you can purchase to aide with questing.

I hate the Blizzard quest watch list. It is difficult to see and you cant resize it. Carbonites quest watch list is a true joy to work with especially for those who are vision impaired (like me). They are Resizable and adds color so you can keep track of exactly what you are doing.

Therfore, I think Rythal should work on whichever one he feels is the easier fix first... whether that takes a week or several months... I, for onr, can wait.

Thanks again Rythal for undertaking this huge task to keep one of the best WOW add ons viable.

shelleybrush 10-18-12 06:40 PM

I really really really would like both quest and maps.
I have played wow for years now and like the idea of
not having to keep up with a bunch of add ons.
The all in one is what I liked the most about Carbonite.

ldyviper 10-19-12 01:37 PM

quests please.. I can live with maps .. do what you got to do though... I understand if your in middle of something .... I'll just wait... YOUR DOING A GREAT JOB... hug

mcaran 10-19-12 03:28 PM

My Opinion.

Phase 1: Do a new features freeze to fix every single functionality.
Phase 2: Split the addon into modules as planned since the beginning
Phase 3: Start to add new features to the addon.

Maybe you can split the development as well. There are many good programmers out there that knows WOW interface and they could be responsible to update/dev new features to a specific module.

Again my opinion. Donīt do everything alone to not loose your social life.

I would wish the notes were more conveniant to use, and shareable between computers.

For the quest parts i use wow-pro, which i really would like to have in carbonite, or as a part of it :-D
