Except the employee that sold the envelope was caught by the airline and fired. So it sounded really clever, until he had to find another job.
Do a Google search for "airline pass employee fired" and you will find lots of stories of how the airlines are constantly monitoring the auction sites (ebay, craigslist) for these scams.
Moral to the story: a loop hole can end up being a noose you failed to notice.
