Obviously, this is a problem in trying to fit 14 frames evenly either side...
My thoughts were, would it be at all possible to have people designated as "main tanks" by the blizz interface appear in double width frames. That would resolve the empty squares in a useful way.

What'cha think?
You are correct that there are some math issues... the OCD in me has a terrible problem with the fact that there are raid counts which are not divisible by two. ~lol~

When I get to the point that I can sort raid frames, it is my intention to always leave the player out, so only the people in the raid with the player are shown in raid frames. That works for the 15 and 25 man raids making them 14 and 24 man -- but even that's an issue since a 14 man means 7 on a side (a blank spot) -- and then the 10 man becomes 9 raid units, 20 becomes 19 and 40 become 39 -- so it's still a mess any way you shake it.

The problem with your suggestion, however, is twofold... first, the logic would be pretty intense in terms of determining which unit goes in which frame, particularly when you take into account sorting preferences, etc. In addition, not every layout will have a blank hole you can use for the bigger tank frame, so then you need some way of conveying that a frame can be used for the tank, if there is a tank, if there is a place for the frame, if that unit frame panel is active, if the sorting is such-and-such, and if the player wants to have a big tank frame... you get the picture ~smile~
