Actually, there's not much exaggeration. Being a native Suth'nah (Louisiana born, Mississippi and Missouri raised) living in Texas, I CAN say that some places have a much more noticeable accent.

I took some time this weekend to make a 2500 mile round trip. I stopped in Kentucky, about halfway between Louisville, KY, and Cincinatti, OH (about 50-ish miles from either) for gas. Was talkin' to the two pretty gals in the gas station, and started chucklin'. When they asked me why I was laughing, I said, "I'm a thousand miles northeast of where I started this trip. I'm literally 600 miles north and 400 miles east of home. And y'all sound way more southern than I do!"

The funny part is, 50 miles north of there, nobody had a southern accent anymore. o.O

And for the record, my accent is an odd amalgamation of southern, texan, and midwestern. :P
