It seems to be kind of a gray area... Cairenn and the Carbonite folks seem to feel it's okay. I've asked Blizzard directly and receive no response whatsoever to my inquiry.

For now, I tend to read the "no service related to an add-on" to include support since that is clearly a service related to an add-on. However, it may be something Bliz is willing to permit. I dunno. I just really wish they would do something to indicate to the community "Hey, we hear your comments and we're looking at them all and making revisions" if nothing else.

/sigh

My concern is this... I'm a fighter and my nature is to go toe to toe with Blizzard and make them put their lawyers where their mouth is. I volunteered for Army duty in the 70s because I fundamentally believe in right and wrong, fighting for your beliefs, etc. However, I also understand the concept of a greater good... if I go toe to toe with Blizzard and they ban nUI, I'm not the one that gets punished, my users are.

That's where Blizzard has me bent over.

All I can do is try to be creative and to see where this topic leads. I am talking with lawyers and I do have representation, but for now I'm choosing to comply and give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt... and look out for my users. We'll see where it goes from there ~smile~

Yeah, I read it the same way that you did it. I figured services related to an add-on not only included support but was specifically targeting it. There aren't many other "services" that a developer can provide. That said, if Cairenn is supporting the interpretation that Carbonite is taking -- and she clearly is -- I think you're on good ground. In fact, I think it's probably safer ground than distributing the add-on via a private albeit non-donation-required forum, which requires Blizzard to simply trust that you're using no criteria to give access. I'd definitely go for it. Your type of project is exactly the type where users would appreciate value-enhanced support.

Anyway, keep up the good fight. I think you're totally in the right on this.

I'm right there with you... my interpretation of that rule was the same... that charging for support was specifically what they were targeting in stating it.

In any event... many thanks for the moral support... I'll take all I can get as it's sure been a rough couple of weeks.
