An Odd Request

I'm not entirely sure where these questions should go or who I might PM about it so, here goes...

1) I was curious if it's possible to request a name change on these forums? I realize I don't have many posts and I could always create a new forum name but, I would like to keep my post history and join date attached to me. The name I currently have was a hasty decision that was made so that I ask a question about Power Auras.

2) If so, is it possible to request a name that is already taken on this forum which has been inactive for over 5 years (last activity April 4th, 2007)?

Yes, it is possible to have your name changed (though I am uncertain about claiming one that is already in existence). But this is something that an admin will need to do for you. You should get a response here when they are available, however, in the interim, you could post the name you would like as well as an alternate option if you have thought of one.

You're right.

I would like to know if I could change my name on these forums to "MiRai" (with that particular capitalization). The name is already in use by this user but, his user page shows that he has been inactive for quite some time. I would normally not ask to take someone else's name if such inactivity was not the case.

Only problem with that is if Mirai decides to come back and finds out he is now Mirai2 or something, he may contact the mods to rename him back to what he was, e.g., messy. :P

I realize that he could return to these forums, but then again, he could also never return to these forums. If the user in question was an addon author or someone with recent activity I would never ask for such a thing to be done; however, the user is neither.

IRC networks where nicks can be registered via a NickServ-type service have an expiration date on nicks if you haven't logged into them for X amount of days. Even in World of Warcraft you can submit a ticket to have a GM free up a name if its on an inactive account for long enough. What I'm getting at is there is usually some sort of expiration date (whether publicly stated or not) on names on the internet because they're not really owned by anyone -- I don't own MiRai and neither does the person who registered it. However, it would seem that he's been done using it for over 5 years (that's a long time) and I am only asking if I could now use it.
