Velocity Of Money...

It is August. In a small town on the South Coast of France, the holiday season is in full swing, but it is raining so there is not too much business happening. Everyone is heavily in debt.

Luckily, a rich Russian tourist arrives in the foyer of the small local hotel. He asks for a room and puts a Euro100 note on the reception counter,takes a key and goes to inspect the room located up the stairs on the third floor.

The hotel owner takes the banknote in hurry and rushes to his meat supplier to whom he owes E100.

The butcher takes the money and races to his supplier to pay his debt.

The wholesaler rushes to the farmer to pay E100 for pigs he purchased some time ago.

The farmer triumphantly gives the E100 note to a local prostitute who gave him her services on credit.

The prostitute goes quickly to the hotel, as she owed the hotel for her hourly room use to entertain clients.

At that moment, the rich Russian is coming down to reception and informs the hotel owner that the proposed room is unsatisfactory and takes his E100 back and departs.

There was no profit or income. There was NO real economic activity. But everyone no longer has any debt and the small town people look optimistically towards their future.

COULD THIS BE A SOLUTION TO THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS?

Perhaps I'm owed a whoosh, but it seems to me that the only unusual thing that happened is that the rich guy stole 100 euro from the hotel........?

Only if you assume he took the room and didn't just "go up to inspect it" and whether or not he actually used the room while he was "inspecting" it.

EDIT: The way I read that was the hotelier took money that wasn't his to pay for something which circulated all the way around the town and gave a false sense of having stimulated the local economy without ever have actually done anything and in that sense, and given current events, that would make the "rich guy" the public and the hotelier the government except in the real world, the rich guy wouldn't have gotten the money back.

RE-EDIT: to be sure... just in case anyone wonders at my off-the-wall comments and sense of humor... I am neither a Republican or Democrat... I am fiercely Independent with tendencies toward Libertarian except for their weakness on defense issues. I'm a strong believer in small government, fair tax and personal liberty.

Scott, we just had a HUGE fair tax rally where I live (Columbia, MO). More than 5000 people showed up! Of course, the local media is saying it was only 2000. But still gives me hope for the future!
