Yeah, afraid so. I originally just googled "CCCP" and went to the first entry without checking any further, but I had a look in my browser history and that's the place.

I feel I have put the cat amongst the pigeons here. I actually attempted the install the codecs 4 times and each time my AV stopped the script so I made a note of it. It picked it up again during my weekly full scan yesterday too. I'd fire this information up on the CCCP forums but (call me paranoid) don't fancy having to register to do it.

((it's a codec package nothing more or less.))
Just as easy for me to package malware or a virus in a codec package as in any other kind of file. Even easier since most people require at least 1-2 codecs. Don't automatically dismiss someone's report of a dirty file.

I'm guessing you never saw the rash of virus filled codec packs and other malicious doing around the time of Kazaa's death? Closer to home you can look at UICentral and their last couple run-in's with viruses.

Thing is this has to be the most recommended codec package when dealing with fansubs..... just about everyone on Rizon recommends it. ((its CCCP K-lite or VLC))

So don't tell me that it could possibly have malware or a virus when it does not.

and the reason why she's probably getting her AV to go off is because it does alter some registry settings so things like ffdshow and such will work properly

OK, I'll update what I said...

I went back to the site and re-downloaded it just so I could show the screenshot of the AV catching the malware on installation for anyone that was doubting me. However, I got no such alert and all installed absolutely fine.

The thing I noticed is that on every download request it fetches a different (random) mirror, so I can only assume that one of the mirrors was corrupted with this malware as it plainly doesn't apply to all of them.

Thing is, almost every install of anything alters registry settings but they don't all fire off malware alerts when they do.

I did because it did! It may be exactly because of it's popularity that someone thought they could slip some malware in. There is always someone out there who wants to spoil it for others.

This is more along the lines of what I suggested. Not saying the authors of CCCP would ever intend for a virus to be distributed. I am saying it's possible. It's also possible that the AV in question had a false positive.

Now what if Photoshop was adding an invisible watermark (similar to stereoscopic effects) to every picture you save encoding your CPU serial number and the product key. They would be able to track anything you ever did using the product. Scary hu?

Well, interestingly there was no warning when I AV'ed the CCCP file before install. It was only during that the warning came.

Anyway, it's fine now. I wish now that I had taken note of the mirror the corrupt version came from so I could post that.

OMG... dude lol. Please, let me organize that mess. Jeebus!

I have all my apps categorized; Comp Apps (for apps like Core Temp and WinRar), Security Apps (self explanatory), Internet Apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Filezilla), Gaming Apps (WoW, Fraps, XFire), Graphic Apps (Adobe, PSP, MS Paint), Music Apps... you get the idea.

I can find things soooo much faster. Holy cow, when I see a start menu like yours it drives me insane rofl.
