And we have already pre ordered Windows 7 so can switch straight to that when it arrives.

Run Virtual Box.. it's hella fun! At the moment I have Linux, FreeBSD, and three versions of Windows 7 on mine. Not a single partition needed on my live box.

Oh definitely. I use VirtualBox on occasion if I get tired of trying to make something work under Wine.

But I think most people who are installing Win7 RC are doing so to get a feel for it as their primary OS and IMO virtualization doesn't really cut it there. For example I notice that you have Aero off; that makes a big difference in the usefulness of the new taskbar. I haven't tried Win7 under VB 3 though, so maybe it works with that.

Yeah, that was my whole reason for trying out win 7 now, to see if my day to day apps will work with it. Once win 7 arrives I'll be pretty much reformatting the whole hard drive and reinstalling it all

Although, there should be some good free T1 hypervisors designed for desktops/laptops soon. That will change things a lot.

Supposedly the new Beta version of VB lets you use Aero (might even let you run WoW, dunno). I keep procrastinating in trying it out though lol.

Yeah I tried it, WoW complains that it can't find a good enough video card, although maybe I'm missing something. I haven't bothered making a Win7 VM until now, but this thread reminded me I wanted to try it out so it's installing ATM. If it works well enough I might finally replace my XP VM.

Hmph... okay... one point of disappointment... I went to install Windows Live One Care and received a notice it was not compatible with W7. So I went and dug deeper to see if there was a compatible version out there and found out Microsoft has killed it. That's disappointing... I loath most AV apps as resource hogs and often causing system stability issues, but as much as I have AV in general and despise Microsoft in particular, I have to give credit where credit is due because One Care was lightweight as can be, highly unobtrusive and worked reliably.

So... now... I gotta figure out what to replace it with and worst of all... I hate them all... /sigh

Maybe I'll just wait for the One Care replacement Morrow to be released.... anyone know if there's a beta download link for it yet?

So i played with virtualbox a little and its a nifty program. Installed windows 7 in it and set the recources it would have to a fairly minimal number just to see and it ran pretty well. Looks to be a nice OS from what little i could sample.

Only thing i couldnt get virtualbox to do was recognize my existing hardware so windows 7 would. So my resolutions were all wonky and my sound non existent. id like to give it a real test run before i opt to go for the full version when it comes out. Im sure its just my lack of knowledge with vbox that is the problem.

Otherwise so far so good hehe

Yes I know it might have been a little risky but I put Win 7 RC on both my laptop and home pc as my only OS and haven't had any real issues. I love it. Everything I have that worked on Vista works with it. I really think they can quiet some of the critics with this OS.

PS I did backup all data on a usb hard drive first but haven't needed it.

I did the same thing, but I installed Win 7 on my daughters computer. I have to play with it every now and again because I have strict parental rules set on it (that along with a custom host file to block bad sites and OpenDNS all together is amazing!). Originally I wiped XP and installed 7 on mine.. fell in love with it and ended up putting Vista Ultimate (always swore I would never use Vista lol) on here. Vista really isn't so bad! At any rate, Vista on my computer, Win 7 on my daughters, and XP on my roomies computer hehe.

I ran WoW on 7 for about a month or so. In my personal experience, the game ran smoother on 7 than it did on XP and smoother than it does on Vista. In all fairness though, I had just built a new computer so everything was up to date and new. It runs okay on my daughters computer, but not as well as it did on mine. The computer she has.... all the hardware is pretty old, and the video card is on it's last leg. In a nutshell it is of my personal opinion that those with newer hardware are going to get the best results from Windows 7.

On a sidenote... I thought it was funny that Halo, a Microsoft game, refused to install on Windows 7.
