But when the link target is updated, you don't need to edit your post with an updated attachment, the same link works for the new and updated file!

That is assuming people save links they come across, there oughta be a place/database with content like this (like the various GitHub repos for extracted UI files)

Well, technically, there is a database with this info; it's called Wowhead.com. It just doesn't prevent this info in a human-browsable format.

Someone write a site that pulls this data from wowhead and displays it in a nice format :P
