Carbonite mad note replacement?

As Carbonite has now broken to the point where the errors are causing performance issues, I'm looking for alternatives, and where better to ask :-D

The thing I mess the most, is the ability to add notes to the world map.
Can anyone recommend any good add ons which can do that?

Have you tried HandyNotes and its various modules?
