Unhappy GC and memory usage problem

G'day boss,

firstly a word of thanks for a great minimalistic UI, REALLY cleared up the clutter and gave me back some valuable screen real-estate.

Now. Having got the niceties out of the way, here comes the grumble.

Was stuck at home with my good friend Influ Enza and decided to take my mind of it by levelling a small toon.

After the first initial 5 hours no troubles with FPS or Mem usage, logged off for a well earned snack and some boobtube time and came back after 1 1/2 hours. Logged on, ran some minor quests for Ratchet and within 30mins, FPS slammed down to 3-5FPS and Mem usage on nUI+ went berzerk on me.

Took my toon to the Ratchet Inn, no-one else about and just sat back and watched the Mem usage after doing an /nui rl, did this for 30 mins and on average Mem ticked over at .5Mb every 3 secs and was then hit with the GC - FPS down to 0-4FPs and hung there for 15-20secs before any visual response. Starting Mem usage for nUI+ was 6mb initially and then started to skyrocket well over 30Mb with no action from me.

Any suggestions on what could be causing the above headaches?

Cheers

No clue at all. Did you have any other mods installed? I would be curious to know if you get the same result with nUI being the only mod enabled.

I'm not saying the issue isn't nUI... just want to know if it is a conflict issue or something strange happening internally. I would also like to know the exact version that nUI is saying is installed in the greeting message printed in the chat frame when you log in.

Okay, I'm running version 5.03.01.

Logged in and faced my toon at a wall in the CrossRoads Inn so that there was no visual interference.

Let the system stabilise (2-3mins) and then did a mem usage check on nUI, below are the results done at 1 minute intervals:
  • 1. 17.22
  • 2. 18.60
  • 3. 16.94
  • 4. 14.52
  • 5. 15.65
  • 6. 17.01
  • 7. 18.40
  • 8. 19.72
  • 9. 21.07
  • 10. 22.41

Addons as follows:
  1. AuctionMaster
  2. Autoprofit (Out Of Date [OOD])
  3. Carbonite
  4. ChatMod
  5. EasyMail
  6. EquipCompare
  7. Fubar (with 6 plug ins [5 x OOD])
  8. Grid
  9. Larger Macro Icon Selection (OOD)
  10. Leave Me Alone (OOD)
  11. LightHeaded
  12. nUI: InfoPanel Grid (OOD)
  13. nUI: InfoPanel Carbonite (OOD)
  14. Omen3
  15. OneBag3
  16. OneBank3
  17. Outfitter
  18. RatingBuster
  19. Recount
  20. Skillet (OOD)
  21. SLDataText (OOD)
  22. XLoot (OOD)
  23. XLoot Monitor (OOD)
I've included the Out Of Date (OOD) modules in case these cause an issue, however don't believe so as I did NOT do anything apart from logging in and checking the memory usage.

If any more info is required let me know and I'll provide as much info as possible.

Cheers

Okay... to start, it is normal for nUI's memory usage to keep ticking up until the garbage collector runs, though at "one minute intervals" I'm a bit stunned it didn't run on it's own long before ten minutes went by. That said, nUI has *no* control over when the garbage collector runs... that is controlled by Blizzard and more specifically by the Lua interpreter.

What happens if you repeat that test having disabled all of those mods except nUI? Do you still have the huge FPS drop and lockup?

To answer your question
What happens if you repeat that test having disabled all of those mods except nUI? Do you still have the huge FPS drop and lockup?
no issues what so ever, but then again, mind that I wasn't doing anything, toon was facing the wall and the only movement was my mouse hovering over the menu bar to bring up FPS/Latency/Mem Usage.

One other thing I have noticed and tested with and without bag/inventory add-ons is that when I go to a merchant/bank, I get a 1-2 second frame freeze could there be an underlying issue in there somewhere?

Well, hope you don't get too many splinters scratching your noggin' on this one

Cheers

Well... looking at those numbers, I would call those far more reasonable and expected than your prior example. They are pretty much in the normal range and it is expected that the size will tick up and then drop back when the garbage collector fires.

That said... nUI does not interact with any of Bliz's menus and windows such as quest log, inventory, vendors, quest givers, etc. If you're seeing issues there then there's some external variable that's impacting your game engine.

Have you ever done a clean install as per the instructions in this FAQ? http://www.wowinterface.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=21716

If not -- I would highly recommend giving that a go and see if it resolves the frame-freeze issue you're having.

Thanks very much for the help and advice (and the prompt replies), it's greatly appreciated as I do not want to go back to my 'old' layout with a gazillion and 7 add-ons, when a well thought out and practicable application, as nUI is, will achieve the same result with less fuss and less system vampirism.

I'd now also like to make a belated apology after having followed your link and having read your suggestions there. To start with, 'Yes' I followed the instructions to the letter as having dual monitors I was able to have the instructions up on one screen whilst 'engineering' my WoW + nUI setup on the other.

The apology stems from my inadvertent brainfart (blame it on old age) of not providing more information to stem this flood of posts by stating that I AM running not only on 'older' system (heck it was near on state-of-the-art 4 year ago) but that I also only have access to dial-up (yeah, sux be to me ) which also would, I believe, be giving me some of the grief that I'm currently encountering.

Having spouted all that over the screen now, I'd also like to again extend a huge KUDOS to you as being one of the most dedicated, helpful and approachable developers that I've seen to date in relation to things WoW related. And 'NO' I don't want to have your children.... just telling it how it is.

And in closing this diatribe, I'd also like to pass on that I've mentioned this extraordinarily functional (and to a degree minimalistic) system to some of my friends whom are amongst the 'Hard-Core' raiders and from what I 've told them, they're going to test this system as they also have the same complaint that made me try nUI ---- BLOODY Screen Clutter and DAMN out of date add-ons..... (Will let you now what their thoughts/recommendations are when they report back to me)

Again, thanks much for all the help and advice.

Cheers
