That was me, for starters. Secondly, I didn't pay for the pro version because when I started using carbonite, I was under the impression that I was encouraged to upgrade, not that I would HAVE to. If I had been told up front that it was a TRIAL and not FREE version, I would have said hey, it's nice, but not worth the ongoing fee. My issue is that I treat addons the same as software. If I'm told it's free, then I consider it free. But for something that starts out free, and then starts messing with menus just because I didn't upgrade to the pro version, that's a shady business. But as I said before, even this isn't why I used the pro version I didn't pay for. My issue was that they put in an expiration (which I could have just have easily changed the date on my pc, but that's a pita to remember to do). And even that isn't that big of an issue. But the issue is, that when it expired, there was no more free version availible. My intent was to use the pro version until the free one was updated again. That is when I realized those bastards went and messed with a window that blizzard originally designed (yeah, they made it look prettier, but it's still the same stuff). Whether it's and addon or regular software that's a HUGE no-no. There was no warning that if I didn't upgrade or remove that they would remove easy access to normal features. Yeah, I could just expand the window, but I didn't even know what was wrong with it at first!

So, basically what they did was say you got a program for windows, and because you don't upgrade right away, every time you open file manager, you only see the drop down menus, and then you have to resize the box. Then when you reboot (in my case relog), all of a sudden you have to resize that darn box again. I mean how could someone really think this kind of behavior is acceptable. They INTENTIONALLY made it so that you had to upgrade if you wanted to keep using the addon. And when this little episode didn't get enough free users to upgrade, they went further over the line and start offering a free version that expired, and hey, what do you know, if you upgrade you can get a version that's ok, but if not, sorry, we'll get to you sooner or later. Then they wanna start serving up your choice of nags or ads?

My point is, had they just been honest up front, and called it what it was, a TRIAL, people wouldn't have been upset. But Carbonite was one of my first addons I installed, and I became dependant on it. Maybe that's my fault, but had I known what kind of company they were, I never would have tried it in the first place. Next time it expires, I may just be one less Carbonite user (if they decide to keep the project going...... I've heard no, but thier site hasn't said).

Bottom line, I never upgraded because I didn't NEED the pro features. I donated to Scott because it was just that, a DONATION. I donated before I realized there was a lite/pro version. And if I didn't, I would have donated for the pro version, because it's features I wanted. Carbonite wasn't a donation, it's a service, one that I didn't require. That's why I didn't upgrade before, and it's why I won't upgrade now.

You're misinformed on the meaning of trial software. Carbonite Quest was never trial software.

Scott,

I just remembered I owed you money from High School...

Just kidding I'm only 30, but I did download your great UI tonight and set it all up and I'm in love with it and my OCD thanks you! Thanks for the great work, the great service, and for fighting the good fight and not giving up.

A New Happy User

Hi Scott,

My wife and I are giving nUI a trail run this week. So far we like what we see, and we will most likely donate at the end of the week.

Personally I support you all the way with your stance on this. Something I may suggest though is you may want to change the names from nUI Lite / nUI Premium given that Blizzard has said that you can't have a premium version of the mod.

I know, I know you are making the premium version available freely, but in order to stop any compliant a name change along the lines of something like nUI / nUI Raids may be better suited to the new policy. Then again it may not be, I just didn't want you to get into any trouble with Blizzard and thought I'd throw the suggestion out there.

All the very best,

Raven

Can we stop discussing "donations" for the "pro version" as a "thank you" for your donation, please and thank you?

I personally think your donators should be allowed to help out with the development of your addon in a closed beta

As a matter of record and absolute clarity, as was stated in my most recent formal announcement, there is no Lite and no Pro version anymore... as required by Bliz's terms and as stated in the announcement, both versions have been merged back into one single version and all versions of nUI are publicly available for free download.

I've been around the software and game industry long enough to know they won't wait for people to comply. They'll just send C&D orders and take down orders to places like WoW Interface. If WoW Interface and Curse.com decide to buck Blizzard, they will send Take Down orders to their ISPs.
Actually this won't happen, as Blizzard has no legal standing to issue the takedown of any mod, whether or not it violates these new guidelines. They have authority inside World of Warcraft, and none on 3rd party sites. In other words, they can ensure offending Mods don't work inside WoW (and probably will), but have no legal footing to wipe them off the web. I assure you their massive legal team will know that.

Both my partner and myself just want to say a BIG thank you for continuing your support with nUI. If it wasn't for this UI i would have given up wow along time ago, and my partner, well she is fairly new to the game and your UI has helped her out so much as well.

For this reason you can count on both our support to keep this awesome project going.

Kudos to you Scott.

Not a problem Raventiger -- I just have to make sure I'm not crossing Bliz as I do not want them blocking nUI... too many people rely on it... the users have to come first.

I appreciate your understanding.

Now's probably a good time, too, to say thank you to Gothic and everyone else in this thread who have voiced your support and appreciation.

My thanks to you all... you do make it possible for me to do what I love.

All I know is when a gnome mage with pigtails does that crazy spell and there's like 6 of em, damn that's just HOT! One of my guildies has a female gnome with pigtails named "Lilhottie" and when there's 6 of her, it reminds me of why I play..... it's all about FUN! lol

Love it

I just started using your addon on March 26, 2009.

I love it.

I normally wouldn't make a donation so quickly after using a new program, but Blizzard's new policies ticked me off so I'm sending a small donation today.

I guess you have Blizzard to thank for my quick donation

What with all the broohaha about Blizz's new policy I have just found this addon and am currently downloading it to test it out. I am a very cdo type of person myself and think that this UI just might finally put me at ease. If so you can be rest assured you will find another donation coming in very soon.
