Unfortunately, Bliz's terms have covered that...

1) Add-ons must be free of charge.

All add-ons must be distributed free of charge.Developers may not create “premium”; versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.

While technically, if I charge for the web site membership, then I am not charging for the download, it would be a very hard position to defend since there would be no other reason to pay for a membership.

I could offer support on the site for a paid membership, but the next clause "charge for services related to the add-on" would preclude that too since support is a service and since it is support of the add-on, then it's related to the add-on.

The subscription could be weekly or monthly ideas of improving game play, Best rotation of spells for each toon. Best game play. Submit their screen shots. They can give hints on how they did a quest and etc. Then your subscribers can be active in helping give info to other players. They would be paying for keeping the website up, maintance, and etc. The Pro Version would be a Free Bonus to subcribers.

Unfortunately that would fall under this clause as in essence you are charging for access to the addon for download. In the broad scope blizzard is saying if you create an addon for wow it must be accessable to anyone who wants it with no money involved. Which means even for someone like me, who writes some stuff for their own personal use, i must supply a publicy accessable source for getting it free of charge. You could go so far as to require someone to come to your home to get a copy of it free of charge but it must be possible and if they did show up youd have to provide it. Anyone feel like jumping on a plane and flying over to my place to pick up a copy of one of my un-named addons? hehehe. Of course it is a lot easier just to have it uploaded to the web, and I have, but good luck finding it . I am NOT required to provide you with that source. It does exist but i doubt you will ever find it.

I can see the possibility of a certain disclaimer that was often used in the past in regards to other code out there stating someting along the lines of the code being provided for intelectual and educational uses only in regards to how to create an addon or write lua code and that the author declines any responability with what you do with it. Anyone else remeber those days? Of course you would not be able to advertise or associate it in anyway with blizzard or wow but they arnt the only ones using lua. Code is just Code.

Now as to the morality in what blizzard is doing, they are just doing what any major company would do. Do I think its right? No. As long as the addon does not violate the game in a way that gives a player an unfair advantage over other players such as in the case of cheats, hacks, automation or botting, then wether that person paid for it or not isnt relevent.
Personaly i do not feel you should have to pay for an addon, ever. So i choose not to use addons that require a subscription etc.
I take nUI as an exception because Scott is simply asking for donations if you feel like helping to continue devolpment of nUI. You will find something similar on many of my websites (i have over 5 personaly and many more privately or hosted). i donated for nUI before the whole Pro thing even came about because i felt Scott deserved it, and will again whenever i am capable of doing so. Wether scott has a pro version or not is moot and i will donate or not donate as i see fit irregardless of what i have access too.

But what if said forums are not just for wow users of your addons ? What if it dealt with other things that would be useful to some or many players ? Might be something to think about Scott ?

For example:

I know you know more than me about writing addons. The extent of my addon creation has been a little window that showed a 3D character with health and mana and their name. I have yet to find anywhere that showed me much beyond that. Although obviously you would rather people not be able to fully write an addon to the extent that nUI is but I for one have been trying to figure out how to do Unit Mods with all the fancy party and raid fanciness but literally have no idea how to start it all off.

How about you set up a small set of acrobat tutorials that go from step 1 to step x on making an addon to do something specific. No need to make it fancy just functional. Say a tutorial on making a quest history viewer to track your quest history and lets you check to see which ones you've done already. I really wish WoW would implement that but I am guessing database constraints would be involved. Especially with so many people with so many alts etc. Free subscribers get access to what you have to offer free (the addon). Paid subscribers get access to other areas that then offer this premium service unrelated to your addons.

I would love to be able to do a fraction of what you have done and thanks to you I have about 10 addons less than I had before nUI was dangled before my eyes. And would love to assist further to add to nUI.

Yes you could do that as blizz hasnt banned websites from profiting from their game YET. But thats besides the point really. This is about the addons and the rights of the authors in how they distribute them which blizzard has absolutely no right to try and control outside of the game itself. They do have legal footing if barely for preventing in game donation requests, adverts, etc (which i personaly dont think would hurt you Scott, yours gets buried in the load info everytime i startup donation buttons are really the only thing most users have any chance of seeing) but no legal right to try and control how an author provides it, wether that be a subscription, donation, or free. Blizz does have the right to say they will not alow addons that require a monetary compensation to run in their game but it is their responsability to police and enforce that, not the authors. Hence some concern that there may soon be a banned addons list built into the game in the near future

And I am not going to be the one to tell Scott that in addition to the 30+hrs a week he puts into nUI that he will also need to provide a website containing content created by him with enough demand to draw people into paying for a subscription for the website content. nUI would no longer be the driving factor and would suffer because of it.

So I work for a major airline. We are supplied these flight passes once a quarter that we can give to our friends so that they can fly at a discounted price.... We'll it specifically states that if you sell, barter, trade or otherwise receive compensation for these tickets by someone it is grounds for immediate termination. ( And they have defiantly walked people out the door because of it ).

About 2 years ago a gentleman (I use that term loosely) posted an ebay auction for a "plain white envelope" bids starting at $300. At the bottom of the posting there was a small note saying that the winner of the "plain white envelope" would as a gift receive inside the envelope 2 of these flight passes.

While i do not agree with what this person did I do think that there might be something here you can put to use.
