Exclamation Slow frame rates/lag in nUI+ and WoW 3.1

nUI Tips & Tricks

There has been a known bug in nUI for a while now which is causing some users to experience lag and low FPS problems, particularly in 25 and 40 man raids...as a result of an exchange with an nUI user tonight who was having serious problems with error messages, I may have pinned down the source of the problem and why it affects some people and not others.

It appears there's a new taint bug somewhere in nUI which got tweaked in the last couple of weeks and Blizzard was doing the pre-release patches. It is causing nUI to throw an average of 85+ taint messages a second and I strongly suspect that in a 25/40 man raid it is even higher than that.

Generally,. taint is an ignorable error and you wouldn't even know it happened unless it's somewhere in the execution path that breaks functionality. To be sure, taint should never happen, but unless it breaks an action, it doesn't hurt anything and has almost zero impact on your system.

However! If you have a bug catching program like Swatter, BugGrabber or BugSack installed and you have that mod set to capture warning messages and/or taint messages, then the taint messages that have recently been introduced are hammering that mod and hammering your hard drive. Likewise, if you have the built in Blizzard taint log enabled (it is disabled by default), it too is hammering your hard drive.

So... if you have a bug tracking mod installed... please turn off the tracking of warnings and/or taint or disable the mod until I can find and fix the taint bug. This should solve your slow frame rate/lag problems. At a minimum, it should greatly improve performance. It will also help to delete the saved variables file for your bug tracking program since it may well be many megs in size. If you have Blizzard's built in taint log enabled, disable it as well.

I'll put out an update as soon as I can track down the source of the taint and code a solution to it.

Scott.

How would we go about disabling the tracking of warning and/or taint? The only thing I have is !Swatter, and that is part of Auctioneer I think? I can try disabling that, but as I stated in the tech. support forum, we have been down this road. We have tested, provided results of this testing, with no other addons but nUI.

Since Blizzards taint thing is off by default, what is the command to check this setting, as I have never heard of it before?

/console taintlog 0

The file is produces when enabled is located in your /logs directory I believe (I"m at work, so I can't look right now) and I have seen taint logs that were approaching 1 gig before.

And let me make this clear... the problem *IS* nUI, that's what I'm saying. What I'm talking about with regard to the bug grabber mods and taint log is a way to reduce the impact on your system that this error is causing for those who have it, not a solution to the problem.

Ok, for giggles I just ran the /console taintlog 0. I also disabled swatter, since that is the only bug catching addon I think I have.

I'll keep you posted on how things go.

Does anyone know how to SPECIFICALLY turn off this feature in swatter...

The /swatter command tool tips didn't seem to clearly state which option would help here...

I didn't see an option specifically for taint when I turned off swatter last night. I just went through and fully disabled it.

I don't recall it off the top of my head... there's not a specific command for taint messages in Swatter... I think it's the option that turns warnings on and off as I recall. Taint is considered a warning level message as opposed to an actual error.

This is pretty much my highest priority atm, but it is not a lightweight issue.

First... it is being discussed here http://www.wowinterface.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=23244 which would be the appropriate place to ask questions and keep track of progress. Second... as indicated in this post http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...03572404&sid=1 this is a much broader problem with affects far more than just nUI, it impacts players using other mods as well.

I just spent seventeen hundred on a new computer cause I thought my computer was the reason why my death knight was unable to level in Northrend due to major lag... and now you tell me it's nUI+?

Dood, if your system was lagging so bad you couldn't play the game, it definitely was not nUI.

Plus, days before you consider a new computer you should have tried turning off all mods and background programs to make sure of what was happening. You need a new computer only after you have eliminated any other source of the problem. I assume you did that, and if the game was lagging that badly, then you definitely needed the new hardware.

Either way, Disabling Swatter and taintlog as recommended by nUI+'s author worked just fine. And you can play without addons? I'd die without nUI...

HP... the monitor was 500 AUD

Mostly it was . But Northrend was unplayable and even on the new PC, northrend was barely playable. As I said, I disabled Swatter and taintlog and it's fine now. If it isn't nui or another addon doing that, then it's one big coincidence :P
