I donated a couple of weeks ago and requested access to the supporters forum as instructed but I haven't heard anything? How long does this normally take?

Faatal or Haavok will have to give you access to that forum. As for your donation, I suppose whether it was "wasted" depends on why you gave it, and whether the nay-sayers here are right about the devs abandoning the project. FWIW, I don't think they are.
