I think for development of addons, it is especially important to eat your own dog food. To me, this involves the following:
  • The developer must actually be an active player in World of Warcraft, and actually use his or her own addons. If the developer does not use the addon in question, there's a good chance of bugs and usability issues remaining present for a long time.
  • If there's a configuration setting in the addon, the developer must use it. If the developer does not use the setting, there's a good chance it'll be bug prone, or have some usability flaw.

I'm sure there are outliers to this idea, but I think it works in general.
