As for the time to finish, we just appreciate you taking your time to make a much-needed app as this. From my point of view, I like the idea of a feature release and a fix-up release.

The manager SHOULD back up saved variables if it is not this is a bug and should be posted in the bug reports area with a relevant log.

As for the suggestion of being able to disable backups, this will likely be added to the configuration panel in 0.3. Thanks for the suggestion.

Shirik

Believe it or not, this is already in development for 0.3 :)

The biggest reason why it's not in yet is for security reasons. That is what's taking me so long on it. We plan to use an asymmetric 4096-bit private/public key RSA signature to validate updates, and the public key will be built into the updater. If we can get the signature verification to work, this will be a piece of cake.

I'm sorry for now that you have to update manually, but hopefully soon this will be a thing of the past we just wanted to make sure everything's secure before venturing on a task like this.

Thanks for the request, though.

As an update, I am going to have to push this back to 0.4.0, sorry. 0.3.0 includes a few critical updates that I need to push out, and I still need to do some work on figuring out how I can connect to the WoWAce SVN while ensuring only stable things come through (or at least trying to ensure that).

The good news is that 0.4.0 is planned to be developed immediately after 0.3.0 is released, and this is the only update for it. I just wanted to separate this from the features of 0.3.0 because those features are that important. I still want this to go through, but I have to have priorities in line.

Thanks,
Shirik

As an update, I have spoken with the Ace lead and he has authorized us to connect to the WoWAce SVN/File server on the condition that it does not become a "significant portion of the traffic." So this will be slated for a future release, though dependent upon the results, it may or may not have to be removed. Let's hope for the better :)

Marking as slated for 0.3

I will be speaking to the appropriate people soon about this request and get back to you when I have an answer from them :) I need to ask them before I start using it to connect, as it would both be using a tool that they provide to the public and put an extra strain that they may not expect on the server.

Thanks for the suggestion,

As far as implementation, I was thinking something like another popup when they install the mod if there are multiple top-level folders in the archive. "This AddOn appears to have multiple modules. Select the modules you would like to update." Then display a list of the items with checkboxes.

I suppose you could even store the selections in your .wid file so the user only has to select the information once unless they decide to change it later.

Again, I'd like to say great work so far. I've been waiting quite some time for a utility like this that actually keeps security in mind.

After having thought about it for a few hours, this is a good idea, but I'm still trying to figure out how to implement it. One of the most important parts of the updater is that current addon authors have to do nothing to get it to work with it. The question becomes how does the updater distinguish between an "optional" component and a "required" component.

Or I could just leave that to the user.

I'd like to get this implemented, but for now it can't be the top of my priorities. But I'll keep this one open and in mind, because it is definitely something that I'd like to see.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Shirik
