NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Fixed screen edge flash when mobs are found.
    • Added ruRU localization from CurseForge.
  • 3.3.5.3:
    • LibRareSpawns' mob screenshots should once again appear when mousing over rows in the achievement tables.
    • Added frFR and koKR localizations.
  • 3.3.5.2: Fixed an error that occurred when “Search for completed achievement NPCs” was disabled and any achievement criteria updated.
  • 3.3.5.1:
    • Scans can now be limited to worlds (continents or instances). If left blank, the scan will stay active no matter where you are.
    • Tables of rares in the Search configuration pane are now sortable by clicking their column headers.

  • 3.3.0.1:
    • Added 3.3's new spirit beast Arcturis to default scan and tamable lists.
    • Added an “/npcscan cache” command to print a message like the log-in cache warning.
    • Removed the rare raptors from default settings, since they no longer drop pets.
    • Removed the mostly obsolete “Search for Tamable NPCs” option.
    • Now uses ZoneIDs instead of map file names to locate tamable mobs. Consequently, The Razza now gets detected accurately in Dire Maul.
  • 3.2.0.8:
    • Rewrote the screen border flash so that it should never conflict with other mods that use it.
    • Achievement tabs now have more prominent checkboxes so disabled tabs will be harder to miss.

  • 3.2.0.2: Now loads properly when _NPCScan.Overlay isn't present.

    • Now manages which overlays are shown by the RareSpawnOverlay and _NPCScan.Overlay addons.
    • Added four rare raptor mobs that drop non-combat pets in 3.2: Dart, Takk the Leaper, Ravasaur Matriarch, and Razormaw Matriarch.
    • No longer shows an alert button for tamable NPCs while resting (in an inn or city), although you will still need to clear the cache.
    • Added all localized mob names for zhTW, and as many as I could find for zhCN and koKR.
    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.
    • Now continues searching for rares in 5-man dungeons. Raid dungeons, battlegrounds, and arenas will still disable scanning, however.
  • 3.1.0.1:
    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

The way that I read this, you do NOT need to be facing it? it is a full 360 scan? Am I correct in reading it that way? Sorry if it was noted already didn't see it (read the whole thread but may have missed it.) Because I saw that some Addons like this you need to "see" it for it to go off.

Also, on some sites it showed the "Pop-up" you get, and I noticed that in the case of TLPD, it was facing differant directions. Sometimes a frontal picture sometimes a side shot. Does it do that to show the way it is traveling if it patrols? If so is a good way to get a "fix" on it's location?
You read correctly: you don't need to face the rare like some of the older mods required. As for the 3D model on the targetting button, it's simply animated to rotate slowly. _NPCScan can't tell where the rare actually is or which way it's facing.

Sadly, there's no way around clearing the cache occasionally.

Each character has a separate list of NPCs to look for. If one of your characters used _NPCScan before Gondria was added, that character's NPC list won't have changed (therefore still no Gondria). The default for logging into a new toon will already have Gondria on the list, though. You can either add her to your older characters' lists manually, or reset their lists using the Defaults > These Settings button at the bottom-left corner of the options window:

Hmmm??
Tamable mobs work funny: If a hunter tames Loque'nahak and you meet that hunter with his pet out, _NPCScan will think you found the rare. You probably ran across a tamed Loque'nahak in Dalaran earlier.

For the moment, objects like the Dalaran books can't be searched for since they're not NPCs. I'm going to try some new ideas to see if this is possible, but I can't guarantee anything. Just keep checking those book spawn points after server restarts in the meantime.

Now I have a UI matching the description, but on tabs 2 and 3 (Frost and Bloody) it is showing half a dozen 'greyed' rares (as if I had found them already) and still shows the one I did kill (Crazed Indu'le Survivor).

There are no 'red x's' (like in the first install) next to my one kill, only a green check mark in col 4. No marks (x's or checks) next to greyed NPCs.

Any help please. Could use help with finding and targeting after alert too.

Thanks
The greyed out ones that don't have red "X"s or green checkmarks are tamable mobs, I'd bet. They'll light up if you check "Search for tamable NPCs" at the top of the options screen, as in this screenshot:
If you want to find that Crazed Indu'le Survivor again, you can enable that second option as well, "Search for completed Achievement NPCs". You might have to clear your cache though, since you found him once already.

_NPCScan is a little harder than most to use because of the cache; I know what you mean. The official UI & Macro Forum that macbuz linked is a great place to get help with installation, though.

If you're having 'general' addon issues this may not be the place to post. Go to the url below and discuss your trouble, I'm sure you will find assistance.

NPCScan Confusion

Not sure what's going on with this addon. I found it just a few days ago at wowinterface and downloaded it and installed it, but found my installation wasn't matching the description/use of the mod. For instance didn't have the 3 tabs across the top, only one window with list of rares and I added TLPD. I found 2 rares and killed one. (Having trouble finding/targeting after npcscan alert).

Anyway, decided to redownload and install. Quit WoW. Tossed Cache. Tossed _NPCScan. Emptied trash. Fresh download. Fresh install.

Thanks
