Neuron  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 1.4.18
by: Soyier, Maul

Neuron development is on an indefinite hiatus upon the launch of WoW 10.0. If you are interested in helping with development efforts to push the project forward into Dragonflight, please reach out to Soyier.

Introduction:
Neuron is a full featured action Bar addon for World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Important Note: Neuron tentatively works with World of Warcraft: Classic and The Burning Crusade: Classic, but none of our developers actively play Classic, so support and bug fixes are offered without any guarantee. Realistically, many bugs in Classic require max level characters to debug, and none of us have any such characters. Outside help with Classic is always welcome!

Example:

Theme Support:
Neuron inherits all theming courtesy of the Masque addon. Neuron has full Masque compatibility, and the theming options found in Masque are quite in-depth, not to mention the robust portfolio of skins made to support Masque. In short, you can make your bars look any way you like!

Features:
  • Neuron features an unlimited number of macros. You can create as many bars/buttons as you want/need per character!
  • Are you a clicker extraordinaire? As many buttons on the screen you want where you want, when you want!
  • Macros the size of Texas! Up to 1024 characters in length!
  • Maul's unique mouse-over key-binding system - where the mouse-over binding system was born!
  • Many other of the favorite desired bar addon features and then some!
  • And, last but not least, MASQUE support!

Graphical Editor:
Neuron contains a graphical bar editor that allows for nearly endless customization to bar shape, size, orientation, and much more! Further, Neuron has neither the limitations on max number of bars nor on the max number of buttons per bar, as you might find in addons such as Bartender4 or Dominoes.

Disclaimer:

Neuron is a fork of the amazing Ion Action Bars addon started by Connor Chenoweth aka Maul, for World of Warcraft Legion and onwards. All credit for the bulk of this addon should go to him accordingly, along with SLOKnightFall for his maintainership throughout the years. I, Soyier, take no credit for the idea or implementation of this addon prior to my adoption of the code in the Fall quarter of 2017.

Re: The future of Neuron

Thank you for everything you've done with Neuron over these years, Soyier! I've used it as my only bar addon ever since the Trinity days back in TBC. Truly appreciate the time you've put into this project. It's been my favourite!

Hope you enjoy Dragonflight. Best wishes!

Likewise, with the changes coming to talents, and actionbars now allowing for different loadouts per spec-profile, to make that work with Neuron all profiles would have to be wiped, requiring a hard version upgrade in the process. At the same time, the core Blizzard UI now has 90% of the functionality that I set out to add with Neuron, and the core Blizzard UI is much more stable and better implemented that what I am able to do with Neuron in my spare time.

Many of you may not know this, but in my personal life I am a neuroscientist (hence the name Neuron), and that doesn't leave me with a lot of free time. You may have noticed a drop in development efforts around 2020 when I was writing my dissertation for my PhD, and unfortunately I have even less time now. I truly feel that if I can't give Neuron the attention it needs, it's probably better to retire it entirely. There's nothing more soul-crushing to me than to have people using my work, experience issues, and having a bad time because of it.

Don't be sad though, there's plenty of options for actionbars out there, and, heck, you can probably get away with just using the game's UI from now on for most play styles. And who knows? This may not be the end of Neuron. Maybe I'll have an itch and need to return and get it working for Dragonflight, or maybe someone else will step up and take over like I did 4 expansions ago. If that sounds like something you'd like to do, please reach out.

Thank you all for your support these many years. It's been an honor to code for you. I think in my retirement I'm just going to play the game and stop worrying to much about breaking API changes and getting same-day releases out. ;-)

Re: The future of Neuron

Thank you so much for your work on this over the years. It's been by far my best add-on and one I encouraged others to use.

It already has an open license (MIT), and I've been trying to find someone for the better part of 2 years to help maintain the project without so much as a peep. If that person were to step up, I would gladly work with them to hand off responsibilities (as I've said dozens of times, even in the afformentioned post)

Guide? and how to deal with. [mod:ctrlshift]

Hi

AWESOME ADDON - THANKS

I'm trying to switch from bartender completely in WOTLK and struggling with bar states. Is there a guide somwhere?

I want my main druid bar to switch with stances - that works fine!
I also want to either switch it or hide it when BOTH ctrl and shift are pressed and show a different bar.

I can't seem to make custom states work, and also don't know how I would combine stance and modifier state changing. As an alternative I could make the bar disappear with [mod:crlshift] and show a different bar.
I can't seem to find a way to put [mod:ctrlshift]hide;show as a visibility option.

any help appreciated

(Also - what does the multi spec button do in WOTLK? Again any where I can read about it most welcome)

As another Neuron user and not the dev, I'm not sure, but I personally use a macro that's simply
Code:
/run VehicleExit()
to exit vehicles. Maybe that workaround works for now.

The new UI is supposed to have per-spec states, you can move them anywhere, you have robust macroing now in the game + mouseovers, you can have many more buttons, etc. etc. These were all the features about Neuron I was interested in developing, and it seems like Blizz is putting me out of work in that regard lol. I'm not exactly sure what the future holds, though do know that my availability to develop things like addons are much less now than they were before since getting my PhD.

I'm more than happy to hand off responsibilities to someone if they were to step up. The way I feel, either Neuron needs to have much more development time or it should be retired for the new base UI. It's been somewhat stale (which is my fault) for a full expansion, mostly due to my waning interest in the game tbh, and that's not doing anyone any good.
Well I'd like to thank you, Maul, and all the others who have touched this project over the many many years I've used it (Macaroon, Ion, Neuron, and the other iterations I can't remember the names of). It's been fantastic for me and my UI preferences, no other addon could setup the way I wanted. Gratz on the PhD my friend, and I wish you nothing but the best in your life! A heartfelt thank you from me!

Has there been any progress or resolution on the issue of displaying remaining spell durations on buttons? In previous versions (I'll use Rogue for example here), if I Rupture a target, the duration of Rupture would appear as a countdown number on the Rupture button. If I tab off that target, the number went away. If I tabbed back, again the remaining duration of Rupture on that target appeared.

Buff duration also appeared on-button (Slice and Dice, for example).

The feature disappeared some time ago and has not returned. I've resorted to setting up Weak Auras to serve the purpose, but it was so much nicer as a countdown on the button itself through Neuron.

Is this feature on the slate to make a comeback, or has Blizzard broken it forever? I hope it's not the latter, because WeakAuras can still grab the info and display it, not sure why this couldn't be a Neuron feature (but I'm not the expert lol).

Good luck with Dragonflight! I got nervous when they announced a UI revamp, immediately thought of you and hoping you're planning on continuing this amazing addon!

Unfortunately this is a pain when it happens during combat because you cant configure bars while in combat so I get stuck not being able to do anything.
Under Bar Sates in the Bar Editing Window you need to make sure you have "Posses", "Vehicle", and "Override" states enabled on at least one bar, usually your main combat bar. This will allow those states to automatically trigger and take over the bar's contents.
I definitely have those already selected. I just deleted and created a new bar to make sure I hadnt changed anything else as well and am still having the same issue It even happens when Neuron is the only addon I have enabled and all others are off from the log in screen.

any ideas?
Hrm have you tried a fresh profile? I'm wondering if there is a bug somewhere, but it sounds like it's going to be hard to replicate. Can you take a screenshot of the bar settings page so I can see how you have it configured?
SO i deleted my saved variables etc and started fresh and it seems to be working fine so far. I have no idea what was causing the issue. Thanks for trying to help me out
