TK Undead Gothic UI Theme version 1.1.2005

Wow Undead Gothic UI Theme

Updates:

Latest updates and information:

* November, 10 2005

Updates/Fixes in Version 1.1.2005

- Fixed offset borders.
- Completed tabbed dialog art conversion. (one tab was previously not converted to undead art)
- Replaced many more UI pieces with Undead Gothic art.
- Added a clean (without border design) parchment to Quest Log panel.

Previous notes:

This UI was designed to be a simple themed graphics swap-out, as not to break add-ons. I didn't want it to be overstated or understated, so hopefully I found a balance that is somewhere between the two. I really like the default Wow UI, Blizzard did an absolutely fantastic job designing it.

This is really last minute stuff, as I've been working on several different games at once (3 of them), and have been in-out of town during the last stretch. There are a LOT of pieces to the Wow UI, too many to completely replace at first pass, but the initial release for Halloween will have enough of the UI changed graphically to enjoy the theme. I will come back and make major overall improvements to it of course.

There are going to be 2 different types of Menu decorations available, the skull and candles are just 1 of the two.

Design comments:

Rather than borrow from previous Warcraft art, such as the Warcraft RTS interface skins. I incorporated my own style within the existing framework, without having to exadurate features to leap out at you. I really wanted a clean Undead skin that didn't distract away from the game enviroment, but rather conveyed a dark-muted haunted-cemetary-like palette. (If anyone is planning to - or has used previous WC1-3 RTS UI art for Wow UI's, this is not intended as a negative comment, but rather to simply state I wish to use my own style.)

The screenshot has side-by-sides so you can see what I mean. Some possible additions later on include animations, such as glowing candles. Again, this is a very quick swap-out graphical theme. Much more elaborate designs are on the horizon. Another has already been started.

This skin is working now, and should be released soon with in-game screenshots.

Two great people: Kuvasie and Tain are working with me on this project, we're working hard now making any last minute additions.

Thank you.

Quick swapout? Last minute stuff??

Good lord, you make it seem so easy. :)

This is great, keep em coming! I missed your stuff since I quit EQ so long ago.

Thank you, and yes it has been crazy all month for me. I've received countless emails from people who have followed my work over the years, requesting skins for Wow. I hope that this skin does not disappoint, due to the tough time constraints.

Many may feel that this skin is more suitable for players of Horde, but hopefully people will be in the Halloween spirit and give it try - as it is really neat to see in-game. I play a Night-Elf Druid myself, and love this theme since it's not overstated, blends into Wow perfectly.

When the skin is up, there should be an official front-page announcement, I just wanted to drop a quick preview in - since many had asked about it at the Austin Game Conference. I had mentioned that it should be up by this past Friday, but the plan is really just to have it ready by or before Halloween.

Thank you for following my work back in EQ, I had a ton of fun making those skins. This was before all the design contraints, and being told to do things differently than the way I would have. I'm still trying to shake off those negative influences that had held me back until very recently.

Andeh 10-30-05 01:50 AM

This is extremely awsome. I dont have any undead characters and im really not fussed over halloween, but im so going to use this when you release it. Im also very curious to see what your other design is, weather it has a more generic theme, rather than an undead theme. You have great talent in Photoshop (asuming thats what you used) and im glad to see you have used it for a great purpose. Keep it up, this is a winner!

Remelio 10-30-05 09:02 PM

Woohoo! :) Looks awesome, but then again what else should we expect!

herbalchild 10-31-05 06:54 AM

yea seriously very nice, cant wait to give it a try

Andeh 10-31-05 08:42 AM

will this be released today?

King,

I've followed your art for years while playing EQ, I'm so happy to see your work come to WoW.

Your interfaces have always been such well thought out designs I cannot wait to try out your new interface and cannot wait to see what you will bring to WoW in the future.

Can't wait to see it!

Don't wait to long before creating a rogue interface ;)

Many Thanks,

Dr Jeckyl

Just uploaded it! :)

I designed this theme to feel like it belongs within the game, by not being overstated and built into the existing framework. It's really neat in-game.

I hope you all enjoy this release! Horde AND/OR Alliance!

vidarc 10-31-05 02:58 PM

nice. i loved all your artwork in EQ. i just couldn't play with the default art afterwards :D

keep up the great work. WoW will look a lot better now

DrJeckyl 10-31-05 03:28 PM

I just downloaded it, although I have several custom addons that seem to be overwriting some of the graphics the work I can see is simply beautiful, quite intricate details. I'm glad to finally have a piece of T.King in WoW.

It has been long missed since my days of EQ, great work, hope to see more in the future.

Thanks,

Dr. Jeckyl

Remelio 10-31-05 04:36 PM

Can't wait to get in game and try it out... They had to reboot the server to restore the halloween content.

*giddy with excitement*

Thanks for creating this for us all!

Hey, first off, awesome work. Can't wait to see if you put out more,

I found a small glitch in the graphics (at least it looks like a out of alignment to me).

Attached a screenshot, if you need any more info from me let me know.

Thanks for the heads up, working on that right now. We'll be patching new parts into this UI over the course of this week. Lots of nice enhancements.

For those who has asked about additional themes. Next month I have something even bigger planned, a theme that I think will fit in with the majority of Wow players, including another seasonal skin. :)

Bah Remelio! the secret is out! =P LOL

I'm making Racial and Class based skins. The next one has already been designed, and it is aimed at the majority of World of Warcraft players. :)

I'll be busy all this week polishing the Undead Gothic theme, and I'll be posting the optional download decoration for this theme.

(edit)

I wanted to add a quick FYI - This is my first crack at the WoW interface, and it was all done last minute. So expect things to improve from here on out, as I get a feel for it.

tharien 11-07-05 10:53 PM

You truly are the King. I wont be using your current interface as i play mostly alliance, but your work is well renoun. I, like many others, have followed your work since the early days of EQ and have never found a better artist. Everything from your class inventory images to your custom buttons is astounding (not to mention the work you've done outside the gaming world). Im overly joyed that you have made an appearence in this game as well and i look forward to your furture work.

~tharien

T.King 11-09-05 03:35 PM

Quick FYI - 11-09-2005

There is an update coming to the Undead skin: version 1.1.2005.

- Fixes to offset border.
- Replace more UI art with Undead theme.
- Possibly some tweaks to spellbook texture to make text easier to read.

Phyzz 11-10-05 07:13 PM

hmm.. little help

I have installed the UI and it looks sweet... :D

One thing though is that in your snap shot of the ui you have a side tool bar and it looks like the mouse curser has an arrow with a skull on it.. When I installed the UI the mouse curser did not change and i can't for the life of me get the side tool bar up...

If i did something wrong let me know so i can fix it. also if there is some sort of options menu to turn on the right side tool bar i can't seem to find it. To let you know i only have one mod other then yours installed and that is Scrolling combat Text...

You haven't done anything wrong. The picture is just a representation and the side bars were left in thier original form as was the cursor. If I am feeling up to it, there may be one more update to include the auction and tradeskills windows.

kanshar 11-11-05 12:01 PM

Just wanted to say that I love your work. I used alot of it when I use to play EQ a long time ago. Ive got nothing but praise for you, thanks for making the games more enjoyable.

Hi Tuwa,
Do you mean that the World of Warcraft\Data folder only has a Cinematics folder in it now, and no other files? The Data folder should have a number of other files in it (I have 19) MPQ files for the game with names like base.MPQ, fonts.MPQ, interface.MPQ, or depending on your system it might just look like base, fonts, interface without the MPQ showing at the end. Then there should be an Interface folder with the updated Undead UI files. If those other files are not there then I think your only option is to reinstall. :(
The addon doesn't overwrite those files at all, it has different file names entirely, and puts them into the World of Warcraft\Data\Interface folder, so I'm not sure how your other files could have gone missing.

If that's not what your Data folder looks like, can you tell me exactly what's in there and we'll try to get you back up and running ASAP?

Sometime ago a friend told me, that on his Mac Notebook, he extracted an Addon to Interface\Addons ... he got asked if he wants to overwrite the existing data, and like used to from Windows he just said "yes". But, his Mac OS not only replaced the last "Interface\Addons\Addonname"-folder... instead it replaced the full "Interface\Addons"-path leaving only the just extracted addon in there, all that was not in the just extracted zip got deleted from his "Interface\Addons"-path.

Not sure if it's allways that way on a Mac, I have no experience with Mac ... but if you happen to have a Mac, I guess the same happened to your Data folder -- and the only chance is a reinstall of WoW in this case.

first off, awesome work, this is the 1st mmorpg i have realy played with any interest, so i havent seen your work before, but from what ive seen with this one skin, im looking forward to future designs :)

I have one issue with the skin though, in WoW, if the target is elite it has a golden dragon around its portrait, which you have replaced. If the target is no elite but a rare spawn it has a grey dragon around its portrait, this doesnt seem to have been replaced, as the logo around the portrait of an elite and rare mob are exactly the same. this is causing some confusion, any chace you could do a small update and make rare and elites have different colour dragons?

cheers

King I absolutely adore your mod but I have one question. When I load this up in WoW all the textures seems to be of poor quality and do not appear like the screenshot you have posted..happen to have any suggestions? (Note I do run WoW on max settings so I know its nothing on my end in-game setting wise..atleast I hope not..lol)

Please post a screenshot and let us know what resolution you are running on your system. Also, what setting do you have your UI set at. Tom and I have been trying to figure out the best quality to present the community for all the possibilties available to the player.

The UI is not as complete as we would like, but the quality should be good. Keep in mind, the screenshot Tom posted was a concept shot, not an in game shot. But even so, the quality should be satisfactory.

Theolis 12-12-05 02:22 AM

I was wondering, has this one been patched with the cursor? I've installed all the files and everything is looking VERY sweet! I just don't see a change in the cursor. I did a search in this post to see if I maybe did something wrong but all I could find was a post saying something about maybe adding it in.

I also did a search in the night elf theme to see if maybe I could find the answer there. I did manage to find a post that said the night elf theme indeed includes the cursor art. So any such luck for the undead theme?

(no bliz ui kit installed currently - took it out to get this to work)

Cairenn 12-12-05 02:43 AM

At this point the cursor is *not* enabled in either theme. The intended graphics are shown as examples.

Theolis 12-12-05 02:00 PM

Okay, thanks for the speedy response. I look forward to when they are added!

how can i fix it?

karlthegewgaw 12-27-05 04:46 PM

none

I'm curious as to which .blp converter you're using.
I can't seem to find any decent blp converters.
I haven't been able to find anything documented in any of the release notes.

thanks in advance

endsville 02-23-06 06:06 PM

I love the undead theme... I have one issue though.. the graphics used for text (books, etc - as shown in the screenshot) ... the little black blocks in the corners obscure text sometimes... I like the new castle mod, but like the undead one better, *however* I do like the text part for the castle better... is there anyway to take just the book part from the castle interface and replace the undead one? I tried converting some of the blp to jpg to see if I can find the right ones to replace, but didn't seem to find them... I added in the castle auctionhouse part (since the UD one didn't have one) -- it's an interesting mix lol.. part undead, part castle... but I'd like to be able to read the text in the game... =/

kharsis 02-28-06 04:50 PM

completion date?

I am using the undead ui and love it. However it seems to be unfinished as I don't have the mouse cursor and not all screens convert to the new artwork eg. bags inside bank, secondary bags.

When will there be an update to complete this excellent addition?

I am using 1.1.2005

Thanx

This UI was my first attempt with WoW's UI. We changed what we thought were the most commonly used panels. This theme will get an overhaul to include all other panels we missed. Right now, we're making some corrections/improvements to the Castle theme, providing an "alternate" version of it, including total compatibility with some mods that override the default UI.

Afterwords, I'm going to start the fixes from Undead Gothic onwards.

kharsis 03-04-06 04:52 PM

Thank you for your eply to my query and wait with anticpation for the updated artwork.

Thank you for creating such a creative and intersting mod for WoW.

Woa... Dead stuff! Speechless....

endsville 03-07-06 02:47 AM

any fixes intended for the reading part of the UD theme? (eg get a book, read it, find a note, read it...) The black boxes at the 4 corners (well, scroll work) obscure some of the text so yuo can't read it all.. =( I love the castle background just can't find a way to overwrite the UD theme with the castle theme for just that part....

Hello. im not 2 happy right now....

the graphics are great. but one thing, hwo do i get rid of them?? after putting them on i lagged llike no other, to the point i couldnt play. I tried repalcing ur files with the orginal ones that come when warcraft is installed but that didnt work. so i uninstalled WoW and reinstalled it yet somehow ur graphics are still there!! HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN!?!?! how can i get rid of them?

Kifihok 03-23-06 04:29 PM

...

im sry about my user name but i hvaent been able to play WoW for 4 days now. i am getting very angry.  how do i get rid of these files that have corrupted WoW?

Cairenn 03-23-06 04:30 PM

If you installed the mod, one has to presume you read the instructions, since it isn't installed the same way as most. If you read the instructions, one has to presume that you would realize you need to delete them from the same place you put them ... \World of Warcraft\Data\Interface. One would presume you realize that you need to delete the folders within that folder.

One also has to presume that if you completely deleted and reinstalled WoW, you would have nothing more than the default files. Unless of course when you say that you completely deleted and reinstalled, you mean that you didn't delete it, you just installed it a second time and thus have two copies of it on your computer and are trying to run it from the old copy that has the mod installed.

I told you what you need to do to uninstall it. Go to your WoW\Data\Interface folder and delete the folders in there.

And if you are ready to be a reasonable individual, you may PM me and ask me to change your username to something acceptable.

Kifihok 03-23-06 04:36 PM

"And if you had merely come here 4 days ago and asked nicely, someone would have helped you."

4 days ago i thought it could ahve been just internet problems, but i called wide open west and they said everything is fine. so i decided to wati it out a day or so and so far im still at 1700ms latency T_T

Kifihok 03-23-06 04:44 PM

success!!

i did what u said to do, delete the files. then i ran the repair tool blizzard gives u when u install WoW :D

Cairenn 03-23-06 04:49 PM

Now see how easy that was? Remember that the next time you have problems. Try *asking nicely* for help first, before going off the deep end. :p

Love conversion but questions about it

The are is great, I love the conversion I am just wondering a few things. I have all of the button bars enabled and only the bottom bar and xp bar are modified with the style of the conversion. The 2 upper button bars are not modified and neither of the 2 right side button bars are modified (and the skull is missing from the top of them). Also, only my first bag (the built in bag) shows the style, the rest of the bag windows (which are all 4x4 windows) are in the default blizzard style. Is there any way I can fix these to all have the conversion graphics?
Thanks for putting this conversion out, is very cool.

Doesn't Work

I installed it and nothing as changed. It is all the same. It just didn't work.

Also out of wonder, when it does work, is it possible to make it so that I can install 2 of these, 1 for Ally, 1 for horde?
