Update: 16 May

Shirik may come in and correct me on this but ...

I don't think we're going to make our target of having the first Beta version ready for tomorrow (17 May).

We had something come up last week that we weren't expecting, so one of the things that we wanted to have in place and tested before we released it to all of you got bumped back.

Now, as I said, he may come in and correct me, but I think we are probably looking at bumping it back at least one week (24 May), possibly more.

Sorry guys.

Cralor 05-16-09 07:37 PM

That's why me, and many others, do not like giving out "ETAs" on things being released in the future. It only gives false hopes. Most often ETAs are not reached (go figure :)).

Not a problem for me; a good product needs time.

kraftman 05-16-09 07:39 PM

Probably a good thing for me, I'm sure I would have spent all day playing with it instead of revising, now it'll be out when my exams are over!

Cairenn 05-16-09 07:45 PM

Yeah, we were really hesitant about giving a target date, but we were getting so much pressure ...

I am certainly excited about seeing Minion happen, but I want to see it happen well. Nintendo had a good idea in coming out with mini-disc technology for their systems, but they rushed it, and GameCube happened. I'd rather not see Minion turn into GameCube.

I have high expectations, and I'm willing to be patient enough to see them met. ^^

Shirik 05-16-09 08:33 PM

I have to say I don't exactly agree with Cairenn here, and still think it can come out tomorrow. However, I'm all with you guys in that I don't want to release a poor implementation.

A few things do need to be addressed, however I still think we can hit the 17th. We'll see how things go.

I still want to hit that date.

voodoodad 05-16-09 08:41 PM

I fully support whatever you guys need to do to get this right, ie making it the highest quality updater you can. If that means delaying it a week, then speaking for myself please do it. The WM supporters are going to be in flamethrower mode whatever you do, but the real supporters of this site will wait patiently for however long it takes.

jundo 05-16-09 08:53 PM

I'm new to the community, but still want to put in my 2 cents. I'm absolutely dieing for a unerversal updater. I recently read the article about the {NASTY WORD} updater that was pillaging everyones addon databases, and while it was the most "universal" updater available at the time I quit using it when I found out what it was really doing. Now I either have to update manually (in the case of most of the addons I draw on from this site) or with multiple updaters for the various other sites I download from.

The idea of a truly usefull, safe, accepted, universal updater that the addon sites all accept is the most wonderful thing I can think of. Yes I want it more than any addon I've ever used, but I want it to be fully capable. Just the idea that it is being worked on brings me peace of mind. I'm a patient person and feel that it's better to wait for quality than to take something now just cause it'll do the main thing I want, when it might have bugs that make it not fully functional.

It's ok if you don't make it out on the 17th, I know that when you let it out it will be wonderful.

septor 05-16-09 10:14 PM

I'd rather have it late and working correctly than have it on the day that was set, though if I remember correctly it was mentioned that the date was not set in stone, and it breaking every 10 start ups.

I'd actually be more worried about the reputation that would get generated if you released a crappy product on time over releasing a great product a little late.

We've waited this long, what's another few days? The important thing is there's plenty of progress reports being made so people actually see work getting done and you've mentioned what still needs to be done.

Exactly our concern. Even though it'll be Beta, people will still use it and make their determination on whether or not it's "crap". Once something is labeled "crap", even if it's known that it's Beta, it's bloody hard to change that perception of it.

I appreciate everyone being understanding, though. We're still fighting over it in the staff channel, whether we go with it tomorrow or wait .... ;)

Late release dates are rarely remembered. Terrible launches are (applies to more than one type of launch!).

Oh yeah! People never remember all the times that the space shuttle launched a day or two late, but they can tell you right where they were and what they were doing when those two were destroyed.

Kofetek 05-17-09 02:26 AM

It's cool if the beta release date isn't met, it's better to have a working product a little later than a crappy product now! I'm pretty sure we can all wait and you don't have to rush it Shirik :)

Baltharus 05-17-09 02:45 AM

Same here im exited about the new Minion Updater (mostly cause i like new shiny things.. i and i like to play with new shiny things...)

but a quality release is better than a rushed haphazard release!

take some time! do it right! we will all be here :D

Whenever I read 'Late release date' I have to think about John Romero and Daikatana. I wonder why :banana:

|Yes, but I think they live in the US orsomething, if you read the post times.

ecartman 05-17-09 07:31 AM

ok

OK, so I get it's not today, sad to say, but I get worried when I read the "wait till it is ready for release" We are waiting for a BETA release right? I mean there will be problems, some probably major for the first few weeks (months?) that's what a BETA is. So release it when you want, its your toy. Hope its soon but I know there will have adjustments to make. Good luck, thanks for all your effort.

They never said for sure its not today. The actual person working on it said he is really pushing to get it out today.

clayton6870 05-17-09 10:12 AM

So where are we going to be able to download the beta at?? I am really looking forward to 1 universal updater for all my mods.

1. You'll download your addons from the same place you are downloading them now. The difference is now it will be through one updater.. however;

2. It can only be as universal as site owners allow it to be. The only way you'll be able to download addons from Curse or WoWUI, or any number of other hosting locations, is if the maintainers of THOSE sites create a module for Minion.

Ah, touche. I've had the problem of adding words to sentences I read over the past few days. :\

Either way my points still stand!

oddtoddy 05-17-09 03:27 PM

In my experience playing MMOs since UO, I can't stress enough how important it is not to release something until it's ready.

Thats why it won't be released until July.

The point of Beta-testing is Testing and thats the version thats either being released today or in the next few days.

legine 05-18-09 02:20 PM

point is that software is ruely never ready or finished. It is a good thing to have a roadmap. Even if you dont stick to it.

I think this is moving great! I am looking forward to the updater. :) You are doingd great, Shirik!

This is true and I think they know that. They're only worried about pushing out a half working program and having it get a terrible reputation before it's ready enough to not have any major bugs.

Look at the Curse Client, for example, I tried to use it when the rewrite first got pushed out. It was terrible. I have not used it since, despite it being rumored to be loads better.

First impressions are a GIGANTIC selling point. While something like this can never truly be finished, it can be stable.

Rumored isn't the correct word, since it's others opinions about how they feel about it. Go try it yourself. Form your own opinion.

It is a lot better than the first few versions and now does just about everything right. Some may not like the pay for enhanced usage of the tool, but it still works without that. I ponied up the subscription fee, just because they seem to have gotten it right.

(I am in no way affiliated with that site.)

Keith

legine 05-22-09 03:27 AM

Well i tried the curse client and it works nicely.

I am objecting only ppl that thing a roadmap is not useful. Without one you wont be able to say when you are ready for release. Thats what it is about ;)

MonkH 05-23-09 07:06 AM

still on for 2morrow? :P

Nuchaleft 05-23-09 12:13 PM

It'll be ready "soon" ;)

There has not never been () a solid date set. However, in the "Daily Update Thread" it's mentioned that it may be released sometime tomorrow (Sunday).

Tyrnal 05-23-09 08:26 PM

Been waiting for this program for a while, was excited when it was announced to be in development, was excited when it was named, waiting until it comes out, and will absolutely freak out on that day. Whenever it may be, take your time guys, we can all wait.

clayton6870 05-24-09 07:38 AM

I hope so. My AddOns really need an update, and cba to do it manually :P

Jooze 05-24-09 12:07 PM

Please note the time difference between Shirik and whoever isn't in the same time zone!

Think its GMT -5 or -6 (depending on daylight saving time). So lets say it's -6 that would mean when it's 6 am in the UK Shirik will have failed releasing the client in time =P

Shirik 05-24-09 04:04 PM

I'm actually currently in Washington, which is on pacific time, so I'm GMT-7, sorry :) (GMT-7 due to DST. GMT is not BST for all you UKers out there ;) I'm at BST-8.)

eternal2u 05-24-09 04:49 PM

What he said, I'm DIEING to get my hands on this app...

Been single updating with curse on there superslow speeds, and me being a mod whore I'd like to get back to normal with the decent speeds they had before implementing preimum...and no i cant spell....

tinyu 05-24-09 07:26 PM

its now Monday and no Minion, im a sad panda ><

eternal2u 05-24-09 08:32 PM

im going to cry myself to sleep now..

Meren2109 05-24-09 08:34 PM

Stayed up for this until 4:30 AM (Paris Time). Giving up the hope, goodnight.

klamb213 05-24-09 08:54 PM

It is not yet Monday where Shirik is. Still 2 hours away.

septor 05-24-09 08:54 PM

1) The world doesn't run on the same time zone.
2) There was never any guarantee that it would be released on Sunday anyways.

Cairenn 05-24-09 08:59 PM

For info, in the last week and a half, Shirik has flown from his University in Florida to Washington State to take up his Internship position for the summer and started it. The place he is staying at still doesn't have internet access in place yet, so everything he's done has been via his crackberry. When he headed out there, he expected to have proper internet access when he arrived. Discovering he didn't hasn't helped any. =/

MonkH 05-24-09 09:14 PM

thx for update just what we needed i think!

Sucks about Shirik without net. Ah well. When it's released I'll be glad to try it, and happy to wait until then since I know it'll be worth it.

LittleWhiteDove 05-24-09 09:41 PM

No one in their right mind would expect the release of this when the author does not have proper internet access. Since I am in my right mind (at least I think I am) I will gladly wait a few more hours/days or whatever for this to be ready. I know it will be worth the wait.:)
