Temporarily AWOL

Just a heads up... I'm going to be low profile for a day or so likely... I've decided to do a full backup on my laptop, wipe it and install Windows 7 on it. So I'm going to be "offline" while I'm doing that.

Most of us are running the open beta Release Candidate. Sice Microsoft released the final cut to manufacturing, it should be available for purchase shortly. MSDN and TECHNet customers can D/L images in a week or so I think.

Also, you can pre order the software for October. You should be able to download the Release Candidate version from their website though and burn it onto a disk to install and will last you till about May next year which will give you plenty of time to buy the software if you can't get it straight away.

And once you have downloaded a copy everyone you know can use the install and grab their own key.

The RC (release candidate) is here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...t/default.aspx

I just installed it the other day, myself. A few bumps in the road, but not too bad... Biggest problem is trying to get my sound working correctly.

IMO, if you're doing this on your main/real computer, install Win7 in a small VHD (think of it as a system partition) and don't mess with formatting or installing over your existing OS.

Recommend any good programs for this? Sounds like a fun project for the weekend.

You don't need anything extra. Go into the recovery console before you install, and type diskpart

in diskpart, do this (from memory, so might be wrong, google it if you want to confirm):

create vdisk file=c:\win7.vhd maximum=15000
select vdisk file=c:\win7.vhd
attach vdisk
list disk
(find the vdisk you just created, assume that number is N)
select disk N
create part pri
select part 1
format fs=ntfs quick
active
assign letter=j
(or whatever letter you want)
exit
exit

then install onto drive J: -- it will give you a warning that you can't install, but it works anyway. I think that warning is there because the VHD booting functionality is crippled unless you buy the ludicrously overpriced "Ultimate" version when it actually comes out.

People still dual boot? pfft lol

Xrystal 07-25-09 01:18 PM

Rofl, I just installed it onto an extra partition I had saved for it when I last reinstalled Vista a few months back.

So, yeah technically dual booting but have not had the need to go back to vista yet :D

And we have already pre ordered Windows 7 so can switch straight to that when it arrives.
