ok... how often do you...

check this website and post on forum? :p

Sometime when I'm bored, I go around on here, and Curse-gaming, and offical forum.Worldofwarcraft.com UI forum. The traffic and chatter on here seem to be pretty slow and low... so I'm just curious

But I have to say I was able to find some good post about how to code UI. Like I was searching and trying to understand the whole "frameStrata" thing, and I found a detail post in this site explaining that. forum here is a very good companion along side with Wowwiki, which is not that detail.

Anyway.... <bored> :D

If I'm at the computer (3/4 of my day) and I'm not doing something else (like actually *gasp* playing WoW), I'm usually by here every 5-10 minutes or so.

I know the site is slow. We are banging our heads against walls trying to figure out how to get more people to use the site. :(

I have an idea ... lets hook up a webcam, and do a snapshot of you every 10-15mins or so. And have it upload to this site.

I'm sure that will give some very good incentive for people to stop by multiple times a day, to interact with our lovely Cairenn

a) more likely to break the camera; and
b) even if the camera doesn't break, it'd likely scare everyone away ;)

We need some beta-tester for it... can I sign up for it already? :p

hehehehehehehe

maybe I wanna go home.. stuck at work and can't code my mod... this sux :(

AquaFlare7 04-06-05 10:49 PM

How to get more traffic....

Make a wowInterface guild. People who see this will automatically assume "hey this sounds authentic" and you will be known for it. Another idea is to make a mod and release it at as many ui websites as you can. leaving wowinterface.com as the author name. Submit your name to various search engines. Advertise on the wow official forums. Be persistant.

Now then, can you help me find people who need web design? =P

EDIT: oh and maybe a graphics upgrade to your site would be good too (I love the way it looks, but more than that people love a new fresh view every now and again)

I really can't talk on the subject because today is the first day I have been here, just throwing ideas around the room (hope I didnt hit anyone on the head ^^)

No no, nothing wrong at all. Just, the new site design is well under way, it's been being worked on for a few weeks now. We just hadn't been saying anything about it was all. You suggesting it just proved that we weren't wrong in thinking that the site could use some sprucing up. :)

Shhhh though, it's a secret. ;)

It's a conspiracy theory! something that can't be proven

edit: btw I agree with Aqua, I think some coloring, some "theme/skin" setting would be nice. I can pick "skin/theme" for CTMod.net, as well as Curse ;)

Karmond 04-07-05 01:14 AM

Personally, I don't like the structure of the site. It's completely designed around a forum and isn't very user friendly in my opinion. A forum is not a landmark to base a design of a website around, at least on a visual and interactive level.

Take for instance, Curse. When you go to the "addons" section of the website you're confronted with this.
http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php

Not only does it have a large group of catagories detailing what type of mods they contain, but there is 61 links around the page. Each link advertising individual addons ranging from the most popular to the most recently commented on. This even helps the 'lesser known' mods get some visitors because it was in the "Latest versions" or "New addons" list for half an hour or so. Not only that, but it exposes visitors to nifty mods that otherwise they wouldn't have considered looking for.

One click gives me access to all that.

With WoW Interface, you click on "downloads", and you get this.
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads

Three choices, I click on "User Interfaces."
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads?cid=13

Another three choices, I click on "Stand-Alone Add-ons."
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads?cid=23

And I'm finally at some place that looks like where I want to go, from here I can go through the individual catagories and look for mods I want. There isn't even a search I can use to look for mods. The only lists available are in seperate sections, "New Interfaces" on the home page and "Featured Artists" in one of the sections I went over earlier.

All of these sections and sub-sections could be grouped onto a single page. The way it's currently setup reminds me of one of those telephone service menus, where you have to go through several options before you get to where you want to be.

But now that you've mentioned that there's a new site design in the works during the time it's taken me to write this, have the browser crash and eventually re-write this ;), I guess none of this is even valid anymore. :p

Cairenn 04-07-05 01:49 AM

Actually, there is a "search downloads" that is in the works as well. :)

But yes, this site is much more "forum" oriented, as this site (like our sister sites) is more about community. What you see on our other sites is that in the Released Interfaces forum, there is a thread by every mod author about their mod, linking back to the download, where folks can give and take back and forth. We are trying to encourage the mod authors to do the same here, it's the basic intent behind that forum. We think that folks want somewhere where they can talk to the mod authors when they have questions, suggestions, problems, whatever. We try to provide "full service", not just "here's the mod, now go away and don't bug us, if you have any problems, tough, try to track down the mod author on your own". I'm not saying that the other sites (ala Curse-Gaming) do that, I'm just saying that we've already got it set up with that in mind, as it has proven over the years, on our other sites, to be a very very popular way to present the community.

This site is also very dedicated to supporting the mod authors as well as the end-users, which is why there is a complete section of the forums dedicated to "Author Discussion". It's an area where the mod authors can talk about the nitty gritty details of how to do things, as opposed to the "regular" forums (for lack of a better term) where the end-user doesn't care about the nitty-gritty, they just want it to work.

We could consider re-arranging the Download Area, although I'm not sure what would be better. Suggestions for the site are always welcome though, we've even got a section on the board specifically for that, here! If you can suggest a better way to arrange the categories, please do! We may or may not follow up on your suggestion(s), but we always appreciate hearing from folks on things they'd like to see and ideas of how we can do things better.

alrighty I'll post some of my opinion/feedback like Karmond did on here instead.

One thing that surprised me after posting a recent mod was a couple people saying they wouldn't download it from here. The reason was because they have to register to download. But they were anxious to download it from cursed-gaming.

I can sympathize with them. Whenever I'm asked to register to a site, I'm always wondering if it's worth the bother or risk of spam. If [email protected] has to respond to finish registering, it's more trouble than it's worth. If I hadn't been registered for eqinterface and known about this site before cursed-gaming I probably would've felt the same way.

You may want to make downloads available without registering. Of course keep forums for registered users.

Also every time I come to add a new mod I'm poking all over trying to find an upload link. You'd probably have a few more mods posted if the upload links weren't buried several layers deep in links.

Gello pointed out the two most common mentioned problems of this site, I believe :)
