Chat Positioning Bug

First time poster, and would like to say that I'm very much liking the addon. Used sUI for a while, and wanted a change because of lacking updates; it's taken some getting used to, but nUI is definitely growing on me.

A bug that I've seen hinted at elsewhere but not fully addressed is that my General chat box won't save its positioning or size on logout/reload. I've tried this with both Prat and Chatter, and neither one seems to work; disabling nUI with Chatter still active is currently the only way to fix this.

Again, I'm really liking nUI so far, and this isn't exactly a game-breaker for me, but it would certainly be nice to see fixed. Is there a way to prevent nUI from setting the chat box location and dimensions as a temporary workaround? If so, that'd be great.

Thanks,

- Makael

The nUI chat frame is always anchored to the bottom left of the dashboard and cannot be moved. You can unlock and drag it if you like, but nUI will always place the main chat frame back on the dashboard whenever you log in.

As far as the nUI chat frame being locked, that's not a problem. I don't feel the need to move the frames themselves around. The issue I do have is that it moves the chat box itself to be "centered" on the chat frame, and resizes it to the default size as well. I don't necessarily want it exactly where the addon puts it, I'd rather it stay where I put it. Is there any way to get around nUI placing the chat box where it wants?

Thanks,

Are you talking about the chat frame or the edit box you use to type text into the chat frame?

Makael 07-25-10 12:30 PM

I'm talking about the chat frame box itself - I don't necessarily want it anchored to the bottom left corner, I'd rather have it where I want it. Is there any possible way to do that? Apologies for the terminology confusion.

No... as I posted previously... nUI has specified the location for the chat frame and that overrides the option to unlock and drag the frame where you want it.

The only way to change the location of the main chat frame in nUI is to edit the source... [ Interface > AddOns > nUI > Layouts > Default > nUI_Layout_Default_Dashboard.lua ]

My apologies; I realized as I posted the last comment that I was trying to change the very thing you said was specified by the add-on. Originally I had thought you were referring to the background on top of which the chat frame sits, not the chat frame itself.

Out of curiosity, are there any plans to remove this limitation in future builds so that users can place and resize the chat frame themselves?

Thanks,

There will be several options added to facilitate that to some degree... however, the "info panel" that chat frame is in is set aside specifically for the chat frame, so moving it out of the frame it is supposed to be in is counter-intuitive. You will, however, be able to relocate the info panel itself and, therefore, relocate the chat frame with it.

Fantastic - thanks again for the many replies. As a side note, I don't actually need to move the frame, just resize it. I like having the edit box on the bottom, but as of the current setup it then covers up the action bar in that same location. I'd rather have the edit box inside the "info panel" along with the chat box itself.

If it is covering up the action bar, then something is wrong. Are you using the most recent version of nUI? (5.06.29) -- it sounds like you are not. The chat frame should be entirely inside the area set aside for it and should not be overlapping anything.

When you log in, look at the message nUI prints and see what version it says it is loading.

I am indeed using the latest version (5.06.29). The chat box does not overlap the action bar, but the edit box does. I've attached a screenshot of the lower-left corner of my screen so you can see what I'm referring to. As a side note, as I said earlier, I do like having the edit box at the bottom of the chat box, not the top.

As you know, nUI places the chat edit box at the top of the chat frame. It does that so as not to waste screen space. If the chat edit box is going to be placed at the bottom of the chat frame then it either has to overlap the most recent text in the chat frame or it has to go under that chat frame. If it goes under the chat frame, the chat frame has to be shortened by two lines creating empty space that is almost never used.

Placing the chat edit box at the top of the chat frame means it is always overlapping the oldest chat text and, therefore, rarely overlaps anything of importance.

You have the problem you have because you're changing the behavior of nUI... I presume you're using either Prat or Chatter to put the edit box at the bottom, yes?

The only way you're going to get around this problem is to edit the layout file. You'll have to edit it and make the chat frame shorter to make room for the chat edit box. Look in [ Interface > AddOns > nUI > Layouts > Default > nUI_Layout_Default_Dashboard.lua ]

I'm running Prat and have the same appearance.

There's an option in Prat to move that chat edit box... you can use that if you choose to.
