Well, the simplest solution is to just use a combat text replacement addon like
MSBT until MoP comes out. I used to use it, but eventually decided it was too much clutter on the screen, and now just use the default combat text. I don't really look at the numbers anyway. I just like having some visible indication that I'm successfully hitting my target.
