That doesn't take away the many other privacy concerns, such as showing real names to friends-of-friends, which have already resulted in real people getting harassed. The system is still in practice unsafe for many people to use.
Just signed up for CoH because a few friends play it. In CoH, you get a single unique global alias for each player, and you can friend that alias. You never have to use either login name or real name to friend people, and it's a very popular and widely-used feature.
