I'd like something that can sort my friends into various groups such as guildees alts, or people I'm leveling with, good tanks, etc. Being able to sort within groups would be awesome. .

Try having a look at my-friends on curse, it allows grouping of friends.

I grabbed My-Friends and it works well if the other doesn't work it seems to be exactly what you are looking for as well.
