Shopping cart type download system

Hi Dolby,

I was wondering if it would be possible to implement a shopping cart type system for download's? Where they would be saved to your "list" and then you could download them all as 1 zip or rar.

I actually suggested this a while ago, and I believe Cairenn liked the idea. I'd still love to see it implemented! Espceially with linkable lists.

Yes this idea has been suggested and I like the idea as well but the overhead required for unzipping and repackaging on the server side would be extraordinary.

So until a cpu friendly solution can be found this wont happen.

I don't see why they would have to be unpacked. Just zip or rar the files as they are. So a user would download a huge rar with smaller ones inside of it.

I could do that but wouldn't that be more annoying then helpful?

It'd be kinda cool to open a single archive which has just the addon folders in it, then drag and drop them into your WoW's Addons folder.

So, I see why you'd have to unpack. Since I upload mine as JunkDrop.zip, you'd need to unpack my addon folder that's inside my zip file and then repack it inside the shopping-list zip.

It also kinda goes against our whole policy of never touching (altering) an author's files in any way. What they upload is what the user gets. We look inside it to check what types of files and we run scans on it, but we never actually do anything to the file itself. The simple act of unpacking it and repacking it violates that. Sure, it's a minor and benign 'alteration', but ...

Would it be possible to daisy chain the downloads?

As in, press an "add to cart" button on several different addons then press a "download all" button to start the process. That way nothing has to be repacked and the function is basically the same as it is now, just a bit quicker.

I agree as well could just be a page with the links to the files ie: I select 30 files to download click proceed to cart and am at a page where the files are listed with a few options.

Mock page layout to follow i will do something better later on.

The bandwidth alone for something like that would be horrendous. Smaller files for a site like this is the better way to go, imho.

This sound more like what curse did with their addon-list sharing ... so I'd guess
this asks for a plugin for minion

I agree, I would think this would be a great addon for Minion.
Perhaps even making the Shopping Cart happen in minion itself.

For instance, let's say I want to install all Atlas and it's additions/mods/plugins.
That's quite a list of addons to download.
Can there be a way to perhaps have a shopping cart here on the site that Minion could see and use to DL and install an addon list?
Well, I suppose people who don't use Minion would wonder wtf is going on but the shopping cart doesn't need to be anything complex. The real work would be making the minion addon.

Hehe, I somehow always come up with ideas that make things more complicated.
