Transparent minimap mask?

I started experimenting with minimap masks lately. I decided to try a mask with a smal gradient today.

The result is a semi-transparent minimap.

I actually really like that.
Icons show up onenter and hide via c_timer onleave.

I've just been using solid white!

Hm. Interesting.

I tried something similar a while back. Made a texture with ragged edges like torn paper, set it as a mask, then lowered the alpha of the Minimap so it would look really Diablo'ish. I ran into a problem when being indoors, because it turns out the Minimap itself doesn't respond to alpha changes indoors, anything less than 1 is treated as 0!

BUT... that was the Minimap, I don't think I tried to simply adjust the transparency of the entire mask texture. That might very well be the workaround I was looking for. Because your screenshots are taken indoors, aren't they?

Yes Razorgore. I tried exactly what you did. Minimap:SetAlpha() and everything goes blank. So I tried the alpha channel of the mask. "If I can do papercut edges I may be able to do gradients too."

And right you were!

Awesome discovery man! I did some experiments last night, and it's looking really good so far! Cool thing is that it doesn't affect the icons, they are still fully opaque. I'll post my results here later on.

Hats off to you, man! Where Zork goes today, the rest of the addon community follows tomorrow!

As per usual I might have gone a bit overboard, lol!

Made a texture with a paper pattern, eroded/tore the edges with Gimp and an acrylic brush as the eraser using my tablet, added some crazy opacity masks, added some slight black shadows to the corners, and a little texture to the overlay, and voila!

What I really wish now, though, was that we could somehow colorize and desaturate the Minimap. Because it's too colorful for my taste. But that's not doable, I guess. Not without going the carbonite way and replacing ALL the zone textures. And I won't be doing that anytime soon. Meaning anytime EVER. Actually, I'd desaturate the whole game a bit if I could. I know that it's a Warcraft thing that everything "goes to 11", but I've never liked it. Too much just makes everything feel like less. If it's always maxed out, nothing will ever stand out! This is fairly irrelevant to the subject in this thread, though. :/

What I can say, though, is that such a huge minimap really improves my personal gaming experience when indoors, or anywhere, really. I find myself using the world map less with it, and it's much easier to navigate in caves, buildings, and so on.

Haven't fully decided if I'll actually go for such a monstrosity of a "Mini"-map in this UI, though. But chances are I will.

If you're serious about desaturating the entire game, you can go into the Accessibility tab in the interface options and go through the colorblind filters to see if one of them does what you want.

Changing the "daltonize" cvar from 1 to 0 modifies the filter behavior, as well.

I've played around with those. One of them seems to desaturate quite a bit. Problem is though, I can't enforce settings on others, and I need to see what others see to know if what I create works in-game.

And apart from making addons, I don't actually play WoW, haven't done that for years. So the only times I log in, I can't activate it because I need to see what others see. First world problems!
