HTML5 and hardware acceleration

Hi!

Simple question but I've not been able to find the answer to this. Is it possible to disable hardware acceleration for HTML5-based video content? I much prefer it to Flash because not having Flash installed makes browsing a lot faster. However I often play YouTube music in the background when multitasking and I find especially with WoW that it puts a lot of stress on the graphics card. Flash has an option to disable hardware acceleration so it doesn't have that problem.

I know I could just install Flash and use a plugin that blocks it on all sites apart from YouTube but that's not the most elegant solution to be honest.

Any ideas?

I've never noticed any impact on WoW while web browsing with hardware acceleration enabled. What type of graphics card do you have?

You can type about:flags in Google Chrome's address bar to disable some hardware rendering options. I'm not sure about FireFox or Internet Explorer.

While it isn't the ideal solution, you could always downgrade your browser to FireFox 3, Internet Explorer 8, or Google Chrome 8.

I've got a 6970M. The problem is really only noticeable when playing videos.

Unfortunately Chrome isn't my main web browser, but Safari. I also had a look in Chrome's options but I couldn't find a specific setting for it.

On Chrome goto about:flags and you can find the acceleration flags on the page.

For flash, if you want to disable hardware acceleration you have to go to some flash object, right click and go to to "Settings" then turn off the acceleration under "Display" tab in the mini-dialog that shows in the flash itself.

Helped?

I couldn't find a flag specifically for disabling HTML5. The problem isn't in Chrome though, it's in Safari.

I assume there's no option there, I can't find one at least.

There is no flag for HTML5, just for Direct2D acceleration.
