NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Removed the rare raptors from default settings, since they no longer drop pets.
    • Removed the mostly obsolete “Search for Tamable NPCs” option.
    • Now uses ZoneIDs instead of map file names to locate tamable mobs. Consequently, The Razza now gets detected accurately in Dire Maul.
  • 3.2.0.8:
    • Rewrote the screen border flash so that it should never conflict with other mods that use it.
    • Achievement tabs now have more prominent checkboxes so disabled tabs will be harder to miss.

    • Added a new “NpcOverlay_Found message” to be used by _NPCScan.Overlay.
  • 3.2.0.5: Classified Terror Spinner as a tamable mob.
  • 3.2.0.4: Classified Skoll as a tamable mob.
  • 3.2.0.3:
    • Added new 3.2 rare spirit beast Skoll.
    • Now uses AceEvent-3.0 to communicate with map overlay-type addons.
  • 3.2.0.2: Now loads properly when _NPCScan.Overlay isn't present.
  • 3.2.0.1:
    • Now manages which overlays are shown by the RareSpawnOverlay and _NPCScan.Overlay addons.
    • Added four rare raptor mobs that drop non-combat pets in 3.2: Dart, Takk the Leaper, Ravasaur Matriarch, and Razormaw Matriarch.
    • No longer shows an alert button for tamable NPCs while resting (in an inn or city), although you will still need to clear the cache.
    • Added all localized mob names for zhTW, and as many as I could find for zhCN and koKR.
    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.
    • Now continues searching for rares in 5-man dungeons. Raid dungeons, battlegrounds, and arenas will still disable scanning, however.
  • 3.1.0.1:
    • Achievements to kill rares now have their own lists in the options window.
    • Added slash commands to add and remove NPCs from the custom tracking list: “/npcscan add <NpcID> <Name>” and “/npcscan remove <Name>
    • You can now add tamable mobs to your search list and toggle them all using a “Search for tamable NPCs” setting.
    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

Just go to your WoW directory and delete the directory called Cache. Or open the cache directory and navigate through the subfolders to creaturecache.wdb and delete that.
A few pages back I put some instructions on how to delete the file automatically when starting WoW

Here is what I posted 4 pages ago:
I've created a .bat file for deleting the cache file each time I start WoW. A .bat file more or less is a selfmade executable file which can contain simple instructions (for those who dont know).
Simply open any text editor and write the following
Code:

E:
cd games\world of warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS\
del creaturecache.wdb
cd..
cd..
cd..
wow.exe

Note that you'll have to insert YOUR drive letter (E: in my case) and WoW path for it to work (Note that the "enUS" may be different, depending on which client you use). It changes to the hard disk where WoW is installed, enters the cache directory, deletes the cache file, goes back out to the root directory and starts WoW.
Simply save this file to your desktop as start.bat or start.txt and rename txt to bat. Doubleclicking it will launch it.
There probably is a more sophisticated way of writing this, but it works This way I can always find all rare spawns on each login.
Have fun!

There's currently no way to search for objects like Higher Learning books or chests or herbs/ore.

Re: The option to delete a found mob

So, there is the option to delete something if you've found it before. For example, I was flying around and got notified about the time-lost proto. Unfortunately, it was just the corpse. A few days later I noticed the option to remove the TLPD from the options menu, and I did.

Now, according to the front page, I would need to delete the cache entirely to be able to detect it again. If this is the case, did I actually do anything by deleting it from the menu?
The "cache" is completely different from the /npcscan list. The list in game shows which mobs _NPCScan will search for. The cache on the other hand is a file in your World of Warcraft folder that can only be cleared by deleting it. See the section "Clearing Your Cache" in the description for details on where that file is.

As long as you add the TLPD back to the /npcscan menu (and you clear your cache out), _NPCScan should be able to find the drake again.

Using Irid1um's excellent lead, I went to wowdb and got all 433 rare + rare elites it knows about. I haven't combed through it for extraneous mobs but it loaded ok when I tried them all the first time..

Wow Interface tells me my list is too long to post here, so I've emailed a copy to saiket.
link to offsite download removed - Cairenn
(gone, and yet the internet remembers)

If you are intersted to try and build your own list, merely search wowdb npc's (wowhead will only show you 200 no matter what you do) for rare + rare elite mobs. Save a copy of the page that brings up. You now have a text file full of the id's, mobs, desc, etc etc. Some deft macroing along with search & replace will turn

{id:61,type:7,classification:4,react:[3,3],name:'Thuros Lightfingers',minlevel:11,locs:[12]},

into:

["Thuros Lightfingers"] = 61,

I found at least one nonexistant mob in there, "Khell's M'uru". No idea what that's about.

While leveling I've added all the rare spawns of popular alliance zones to the search engine. Zones include Westfall, Redridge Mountains, Duskwood, Stranglethorn Vale, Dustwallow Marsh, Tanaris, Feralas, Un'Goro Crater and possibly others aswell. Little Timmy in Stormwind will also be detected, as his cat is pretty valuable. I thought it might be useful for others to have the data, so I'm posting it here. All you have to do is to navigate to *WOWDIR*\wtf\account\*ACCOUNTNAME*\*SERVERNAME*\*CHARNAME*\SavedVariables\_NPCScan.lua and paste the following into the file, overwriting all of the other text
Code:

}
4 things:
1) Please make a backup of the original file first.
2) Those mobs will not have colored areas on any map and
3) you have to do this for each character you want to detect the rares with. For chars of level 60+ this is obsolete since you probably won't go back to the lowbie zones anyways.
4) Adding all of these will increase the number of false alarms you will get when you stumble upon a tamed version of a rare mob. So far this hasnt been a problem for me though.

To add rares of other zones: go to www.wowhead.com and do a search for the zone you want. Click on the zone and you will have a listing of NPCs. Create a filter for "rare". Click on one of the rare mobs and look at the URL. The last part of the URL is the NPC ID#, like 534 is the ID for Nefaru. You can paste that info either directly into the lua file (with the correct formatting) or enter it ingame in the config dialog of NPCScan.

Have fun!

Did you completely exit the game, then delete the cache, and finally start it back up? If WoW's still running while you delete it, the old cache will just reappear.

Only happens on The Razza as Skarr is untamable.
