NPCScan  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.13
by: Torhal [More]

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.

Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.

To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.

“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.

Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.

Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.

Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.

New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

    • Added an “Unmute for alert sound” setting to play the alert sound even if WoW is muted.
    • Added an “Alert sound file” dropdown to choose which sound to play for alerts. Additional sounds can be added using SharedMedia-type addons.
    • The alert border flash now only shows when you enable “Screen Edge Flash” in the Default UI's Display Interface Options panel.

    • Found alerts for tamable mobs will note that they are tamable and may be false alarms.
    • Added an option to suppress the “already cached” log-in alert.
    • Added Gondria to the default rare list, and updated some rares that are now tamable in 3.1.

any new information?

I just came across this addon today, I am wondering if there is a new option to change the sound when finding a rarespawn. This sounds like a sick addon and a must have not just for hunters.

I can't really customize the achievement tabs like Bloody Rare; they'll only list mobs that are part of the achievement. You could add him separately as a custom NPC (ID 18684) though.

I actually expected Blizzard to fix the achievement and add him... Poor Bro's achievementless.

Oh, I forgot about that "feature"... It stops scanning when you enter instances for performance during raids.

I kept the lists separate since this mod is aimed at achievement seeking, and different characters will have different rares they need to find.
But creaturescache.wdb is locale-wide. What the deal?

If your list of custom NPCs is really that long, you can copy the per-character settings between each of your characters.
It's easier to just hack TOC file to make all settings account-wide.

What I really suggest, is to maintain acc-wide database and per-character exclude list.
May be add ability to separate manually entered mobs by different tabs to ease this process.

It's not very time-effective to add every single damned rare to every character settings.

If your list of custom NPCs is really that long, you can copy the per-character settings between each of your characters. Let's say you have a primary character called "Main" with the list ready to go. Log out and copy the file <World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\{AccountName}\{Server}\Main\SavedVariables\_NPCScan.lua> (replacing "AccountName"/"Server" with the real names) and paste it into the similar folders for any alts you want. If your alt is named "Twink", you'd paste it into your <World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\{AccountName}\{Server}\Twink\SavedVariables\> folder.

You don't need to nuke the whole Cache folder

Just the creaturecache.wdb under the cache folder, clears settings required by NPCScan without requiring you to re-download everybody's armor and such, much less invasive.

Also, at one point I was sitting at the south bank, on the stairs, in dal when I got a trigger for Putridus the Ancient. So I flew as fast as I could to icecrown just in case but by the time I got there all I could find was his corpse. Still, wonder why it triggerd there? Very weird.
NPCs get added to your cache even if _NPCScan is turned off, so that wouldn't help for hunter pets.

Since Putridus is a giant like a Fel Reaver, you can see him from at least a zone away. I bet whoever killed him was doing Argent Tournament dailies or maybe even waiting for the Time-lost Proto Drake to spawn in Storm Peaks.
