NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.
Nameplates
Alerts will be triggered whenever a nameplate is created, if that nameplate belongs to one of the tracked NPCs. To use this feature with any reliability, the Interface->Names->Always Show Nameplates option must be turned on from the WoW Game Menu.
Dynamic Target Keybinding
NPCScan includes a key binding that will trigger a dynamically-generated targeting macro. Each time it is pressed, the key binding will trigger a /targetexact <mob name=""> for every tracked NPC in the current zone you are in, in addition to any custom NPC additions. This only attempts a search each time it is triggered; it is not a continuous search.
To access this feature, just set a keybind under the Key Bindings->AddOns->NPCScan->Targeting Macro section.
“Found” Alert
When an NPC is found, NPCScan alerts you by playing a loud and distinctive sound, making your screen pulse red, and displaying a Targeting Button for every NPC that is found.
Targeting Buttons
When clicked, the targeting button tries to target the NPC it depicts. You can also bind a key to trigger the newest button, in cases where multiple buttons are spawned.
Note: These buttons cannot be shown during combat. In the unlikely case that you do find a rare while fighting, the button or buttons will appear after you leave combat.
Options
NPCScan's main options window can be accessed from the Interface Options menu. To access the NPC list and other settings, type “/npcscan”.
New sounds can be added to the alert sound dropdown menu by installing SharedMedia.

I cannot get this addon to work. Certain mobs it has cached on every character no matter what even though I've never seen them ever. Of course, it tends to be the mobs I want on my hunter. I have deleted my cache multiple times (including the stupid Windows 7 cache thing), but nothing works. Unless someone has an idea of what I've done wrong, I'm trying a different addon.

For anyone who wants to clean the cache everytime they open wow. Create a new file, eg. RunWoW.bat (the .bat is essential, so have file extentions on). Right click and edit it (in notepad typically)
Input the following; Code:
DEL .\Cache\WDB\enGB\creaturecache.wdb @echo off START .\wow.exe exit |

Yeah, unless you run an ENGLISH version of the game.. Then you have to change one line to:
DEL .\Cache\WDB\enUS\creaturecache.wdb I also prefer to run the launcher, so I just changed it to: START .\launcher.exe You can also make a shortcut on your desktop, but you have to manually find the launcher.exe or wow.exe when you want the WOW icon on there (instead of the default text file icon). You also want to change the shortcut to "Start in" and your wow directory. (ie C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\) This way it still looks like the wow/launcher icon and deletes your cache upon launch. Hope this helps!

Background
Will this addon still alert you if wow is not the active window? That is, if you have another window active, and wow is running in the background (not downsized) so that you can still hear game sound, will it still scan and alert properly?
Thanks for the help. |

I'd like to add that you don't HAVE to delete the "creaturecache.wdb" file each time before starting the game if you simply change the file attribute to "read only" by right-clicking the file and then clicking "Properties" and placing a tick mark in the "Read-Only" box. Once done, every time you exit the game, any NPCs that have been found are discarded because nothing can be written to the file. You will want to move your toon to a spot where there are no NPC hits first, exit the game, delete the file one last time, fire up the game to cause a clean, unmodified file to be created, exit the game again, change the file attribute to "read-only", then you are done. You will always have a clean, unmodified file when you start your gaming session. |

Just create a folder with the same name, it'll prevent WoW creating a cache at any point.
And please do not use unnecessary coloring in your posts, it's unreadable. |

Oops
Okay, not broken - but you do have to enable a selection to load out of date addons in the WoW UI.
My bad.

Modified npcscan marker
It would be nice if you took _npcscan. And modified it to scan for things like. Twilight Sapper, and marking that sapper in a raid environment. I was able to enter in _npcscan npc id 56923. Which did work, once. But after it found the first sapper, and quit working.

Saiket,
I recently added Doomwalker and Doom Lord Kazzak to my NPCScan custom page, but I found that it only ended up being added for that character. Is there currently a way for me to get it so that all characters can see the updated custom NPCs, or do I just have to do what I did today - copy the _NPCScan.lua file from the character with the updated NPCs into each other character's SV folder? I know this would be easily accomplished with a profile manager like many other addons have, but considering that most (I'd say probably 99%) of the NPCScan users don't modify the settings I can see why you wouldn't have put such a feature in yet (if ever). I'm mostly asking about this because it's a royal PITA to get the NPC ID (wowhead), enter it in manually, do any others I want to do, and then have to do each one for all ten of my characters (hence why I just duped the LUA file, which did work without problems at least). |

Just merge SavedVariable and SavedVariablesPerCharacter into one parameter: ## SavedVariables: _NPCScanOptions, _NPCScanOptionsCharacter You'll have to concatenate one of your character settings to global file once it is done, then you'll have full database for all character, whenever you add new NPC. |
