nUI [Retail]  Updated less than 3 days ago!  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 10.2.7.54762.0
by: Xrystal [More]

Preamble
Last year Scott made the decision to step away from nUI development and maybe even WOW itself. So that his baby would go forward without his assistance he placed the addon under Creative Commons license to enable others to carry on maintaining it. I was one of the people he asked if I wanted to be one of the developers going forward. At the time I wasn't playing the game at all due to funds but as per usual, expansion came along and it was time to get my characters up to speed, as well as my addons. So I monitored the CurseForge page and found disappointing customers, I then emailed Scott and had no reply. I decided I would take up the baton and try and keep it at least running with as few problems as possible, my skills are not on par with Scott so it may take me longer to identify some errors than it would for him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Version 7.02.00.00
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Updated TOC for WoW
* Re-released under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommerical 3.0 Unported license

nUI is no longer author supported and is released to the public in the hopes that the
community will continue to support and grow nUI in the years to come. My sincere
thanks to everyone over the years who have helped make nUI what it is (was).

Now
I will keep this maintained as long as I am able to and try to keep WOW non access to a period of working I will of course fix any errors that are identifiable without access, or available via lowbie access if money causes me to take another break.

Going Forward
Depending on the legalities of the license, I will either attempt to create a more robust version of nUI using the newer Blizzard API functionality or more likely attempt to create my own UI from scratch, that works in a similar vein to nUI for those that just can't play without it, I sure missed those InfoPanels

Issues
I've now been added as an author on the curse project for nUI so can you please post any bugs and issues there where possible so that they can be tracked that little bit easier. But feel free to post here if you are unable to.
https://wow.curseforge.com/projects/nui/issues

Alternatives
Of course, like many others, we had problems with nUI that just couldn't easily be fixed or was getting too clunky to be worth using .. but the task of finding an alternative but similar UI is hard to come by .. so here are the ones I tried for a considerable while and will offer them as alternatives to enable you to play the game. All I believe are available via wow interface and may be enough for you to get by.

  • GW2_UI
  • SyncUI
  • SpartanUI
  • ElvUI

Due to my version numbering system I have decided to keep Classic and Retail versions separate but there may be multiple Beta/Alpha versions about but the file name will confirm which nUI/WoW version it is for.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- 10.2.7.54762.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* nUI_OverrideActionBar.lua
> Use the main action bar's binding key's for override bar buttons hotkey usage and display

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- 10.2.7.54673.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* nUI_Button.lua
> Half of this change was actually in 10.2.6.54205.1 but forgot to note it
> Removal of ACTIONBAR_SLOT_CHANGED event watching added for override bar changes
> A side effect was to increase the number of in combat errors
> At least one the quests affected ( Big Boom ) still works without this change
> And I have seen less, even no, errors regarding the action bar during combat.

* nUI_ButtonBar.lua
> Removed UPDATE_VEHICLE_ACTIONBAR event watching - another addition to the override bar fix attempts
> however it causes the below error. The UPDATE_OVERRIDE_ACTIONBAR was similarly removed when I
> allowed Blizzard to control that part of the game outside of some additional positioning

"[ADDON_ACTION_BLOCKED] AddOn 'nUI' tried to call the protected function 'SecureHandlersUpdateFrame:SetAttribute()'.",

* nUI_ShapeshiftBar.lua
> Added the new SpellHighlightTexture and NewActionTexture elements to the list of frames to fit to the button.
> They still have a permanent border but highlighting and using still shows a difference.
> Still doesn't place the icons in the correct location - even tried SetAllPoints but it might be being reset by Blizzard or outright being ignored.

* nUI_PowerBars.lua
> To stop the following error:
2x [ADDON_ACTION_BLOCKED] AddOn 'nUI' tried to call the protected function 'PlayerFrameBottomManagedFramesContainer:SetSize()'.
> This occurs if you switch to moonkin form while in combat - why only druid moonkin form I don't know
> But it pauses the power bar changes until combat finishes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- 10.2.6.54205.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* nUI_MicroMenu.lua
> Finally managed to get the micro menu help tip positioning sorted out, hopefully for all buttons
> The QueueStatus Eye button has been relocated above the menu in a roughly centered position
> Size will hopefully be consistent across display sizes - please tell me if it looks *wrong*
> Need to test it with a dungeon to ensure that it appears when expected - Worked as expected for Follower Dungeons
> Need to test it with vehicle/override bar to ensure that it updates correctly

nUI_Bars.xml
> nUI is now managing the menu

nUI_Layout_Default_Console.lua
> Adjusted the menu buttons size
> Adjusted the menu size to reflect this
> Adjusted the offset for the nUI menu container - everything else is in relation to that
> Adjusted the strata (MEDIUM) and layer (nUI menu 1,blizz Menu 2,button 3) so the menu buttons do not overlay other windows

nUI_Layout_Default_Dashboard.lua
> Removed button options from OverrideBar section

nUI_OverrideActionBar.lua
> Adjusted to use the MicroMenu ResetPosition function to Keep the buttons positioned where we want.

nUI_ButtonBar.lua
> Removed OverrideBar references and the overridebar's vehicle exit button code has been returned back the override bar

nUI.lua
> Hid Blizzards OverrideBar - but we are using it so maybe it temporarily hides it until we start setting it up

NOTE: The changes to the OverrideBar will hopefully not badly effect any vehicle bar functionality which is hopefully working correctly
However, if it isn't I should hopefully be able to do a similar set up for the vehicle bar that I did for the override bar.

The down side is that until I can figure out how to *adjust* the override bar skin it is clearly visually separate from the rest of nUI
The up side is that this will hopefully mean future changes that Blizzard do to the Override Bar won't be as horrible to *fix*

* nUI_Minimap.lua
> Minimap Tracking Frame renamed to TrackingFrame, thanks Blizz.
> Also, repositioned it to off the map.

NOTE: They also added an indicator frame which currently has the 'you have mail' button and
a crafting order button. The mail button was already relocated but I have never done a crafting
order - still have many quests to do in the last zone. Looking at the Blizzard code it should
appear below the tracking icon. So finger's crossed.

-- 10.2.5.52902.0 PTR Version
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* nUI_Button.lua
> Noticed a bit of code I am surprised didn't cause an error. Hopefully rectified it

* nUI_ButtonBag.lua
> There is an AddonCompartmentFrame attached to the minimap. Might be useful, but for now
I put it in the buttonbag and made sure it was still interactive ( at least outside of combat )

** NOTE **
I have still not added the viewport update I did to classic wrath version of nUI into the retail version yet.
The reason for removing it a while back in retail may still be in place so will investigate before adding it

Latest Default nUI Layout for EditMode is in previous update section

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- 10.1.5.50401.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Based on 10.1.5.50006.0 PTR version

* nUI_Movers.lua
> Removed frames that have been added to edit mode and nUI doesn't need to control movement for

* I then tested and made sure everything would work at a basic level
* I started from a clean install prior to the patch hitting so I could make sure the edit mode layout still existed (it did)

* IMPORTANT *
The following are various frames that are a part of the edit mode system that nUI either has
permanent management of, partial management of and no management of.

No Management Of:
> Action Bars 6-8 <
These are new bars, and I have deliberately left them alone in nUI so that users can choose how to use them
I have automatically sized two of them as 2 rows of 6 and one as 3 rows of 4. And resized and positioned
them near the main action bar. Feel free to modify this. It will stick unless you reapply the nUI default
layout or switch to another layout.
I suggest you use 1 or 2 for the spell flyout spell/ability buttons due to the spell flyout changes that haven't been figured out yet

> Objective Tracker, Talking Head, Equipment Durability, Duration Bars, Archaeology Bar, Vehicle Seats, Vehicle Exit Button <
These have either been removed from nUI as there is no extra functionality involved, just placement.
If they were a part of the mover system they have been removed. Some frames may have been reset as a result.
Use /nUI movers to make sure the frames are where you expect .. AFTER loading the nUI layout below / or updating your own one
Or they have never been a part of nUI outside of the mover frame system.

Partial Management Of:
> Chat Frame, Minimap <
These frames can be toggled off and on, for the most part the edit mode positioning matches
the default position for these frames if you didn't have nUI. The Chatframe is a bit annoying
to position but hopefully it works, if not try using Edit Mode to tweak the position.

Full Management Of:
> Player Frames, Enemy Frames <
As far as I know nUI's management of these frames won't interfere with the blizzard ones available
to the edit mode system.

* KNOWN ISSUES *
> Spell Flyout <
Spell Flyout buttons have been changed in Dragonflight and even further in this patch. I have yet
to identify how nUI or addons in general can fix these not working on custom bars. For now there
is a work around. Use the 3 newest action bars to put the spell buttons on those spell flyouts
from your spell book.

> Action Bar In Combat Secure Errors <
These are hard to identify and still happened when nUI wasn't managing the frames the last few patches.
It is definitely linked to what nUI is doing, but outside of the unit frames and bag bar, I have tried
nUI with almost everything disabled and still got the error.
But there is a work around kinda... if you get the error, reload at the first opportunity so that it
resets the secure system until the next occurence.
Hopefully my new nUI like addon ( if I ever manage to get it started ) will identify a way to get this to
work without those issues. The problem could simply be due to nUI's age and the patching up we have had
to do over the decades.

10.1.0.49444.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fixes in response to the following 10.1 changes:
`Updated special resource art and animations for the following classes: Arcane Mage, Death Knight, Feral Druid, Paladin, Rogue, Warlock, and Windwalker Monk.`

* nUI_UnitRunes.lua
* nUI_Units.xml
* nUI_HUD.lua

* nUI_HUDSkin_HealthPower_Player.lua
* nUI_HUDSkin_PlayerTarget_Player.lua
> Removed rune bar elements from these built in Hud Skins,
> if you use a custom hud skin you will have to adjust accordingly

* nUI_PowerBars.lua
> Added RuneFrame to the PowerBars collection and thus to the Mover System
> /nUI movers will now allow you to place the frame where you want like the others
> Updated the Rogue Combo Bar Frame which had changed names in 10.1
> Updated the Druid Cat Form Bar Frame which had changed names in 10.1
> Please note that the combo bar is still a part of the hud system.
> This is because it is tied to the target rather than the player

* nUI.toc
> Added nUI Logo Icon to show on the Addon Screen

NOTE:
When you switch specialisations the new bar frame generated will not automatically be re-attached to the
mover system. A reload of the UI will fix this. It cannot be done via code ( I tried rofl )

> TOC Change Only

NOTE:

Bear in mind I have only tested quest combat part of the game. I know the dungeon eye icon has been moved by blizzard to the micro menu bar, but seeing as nUI is currently not managing that frame it should work fine, positioning may be off a bit though, so let me know of any issues you come across andwhere etc.

ANOTHER NOTE:

I am still seeing action bar combat taint error messages which means nUI is still doing something it shouldn't be, but short of removing the unit frames from nUI leaving the info panel the only major part of nUI standing. However, that might even be causing the problem too. So as per my conversation in the issues discussion post on here ( curse ) I am seeing if I can incorporate an nUI like addon from the ground up one block at a time, hopefully spotting the flaws that surfaced in nUI through it's lifetime ( almost as old as wow - and possibly caused unknowingly by me during my tenure as apprentice addon writer rofl ) - please feel free to check out any of the discussion posts on nui's page on curse.

commands or options for each one nUI may need some control over due to its management of some frames.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This code seem to have been removed by 10.0.7 and I forgot about it - but Blizzard doesn't auto align the frame anyway so will give them a chance to incorporate that while also trying to figure out what they have done to break the old way of fixing this alignment issue.

How this will affect the Override Action Bar I don't know but seeing as both are in WOWs control
all should hopefully be fine. The only thing nUI does with the Override Action Bar is move it
over the unit frame area.

The MicroMenu bar now defaults to a larger scale and positioned as default in the top bars area as before.
The Sysinfo and latency frames have also been moved as they are no longer tied to the now defunct nUI_MicroMenu frame.
Now they are positioned at their new default locations in the spots on either side of the MicroMenu.

WARNING:
If you turn off the console, it doesn't turn off the MicroMenu as well. This is to avoid additional taint ( nUI has enough of that already somewhere ).
If you set the console to mouseover it flashes , probably due to how I am handling the new sysinfo and latency buttons.
I would heavily suggest turning off mouseover if you are set to mouseover.
This is one thing I need to investigate for all versions
I have temporarily disabled the ability to set to mouseover and adjusted existing mouseover settings to always on

* Restored CombatLog and BattlefieldMinimap back into their infopanels and renamed Default
to Empty to allow its void for frames that do not have an info panel for. Bear in mind that
switching out of the Empty infopanel will show both the new infopanel and the frames you
original housed in the Empty one.
> nUI_Layout_Default.xml
> localization.lua and the other locale files

* Adjusted the minimap compass ring so that when roundmap is not active then it uses the NESW
compass points on each side of the square map. When roundmap is active it uses the new compassring
Because these texture items do not correctly align themselves without a reload I force a reload.
Also rescaled the Minimap Icons to 1.6 instead of the old 0.8.

* MinimapCluster.InstanceDifficulty now being accepted in the scaling code in the location frame.
However, it may only be visible when waiting for an instance, which I don't do. So, please let me
know if you can see the icon and whether it is where you were expecting.

* Removed CommunitiesFrame from the mover system as it currently crashes the game and involves a
reload.

New Update

Hopefully catches most of the causes for the action bar in combat issues. I suspect most were linked to the override bar changes I was trying to make to nUI every time they made a functional change to it.

Now, nUI does NOT control the override bar - just repositions it and stops the micro menu buttons from moving from it's nUI location.

If you have a curse log in, any error reports would be great there. Otherwise, here will be fine.

With the speedy aspect of Wow Remix - the least errors affecting progression the better.

Old Comment Clearout

As I usually do over time - I look at the old comments and clear out any that don't have any relevance now. Just to make things tidier.

10.2.7 Issues Noticed

I have been dipping into the new Pandemonium Event which starts off early with some vehicular/override bar functionality. The nUI buttons handled the vehicle bar seemingly well but the override bar is still being a pain in the butt, if not worse.
There also seems to be another error that kicks in when using nUI but not seemingly tied to nUI. At least to the point of offering a clue as to where nUI may be doing something wrong.

I would suggest avoiding nUI when you start hitting these issues , and anything that stops you from playing comfortably. And probably dungeons/raids if you're not in the situation where you can test, note and reload for feedback purposes. The good news is that you can keep the layout so most frames should be where you want them to be.

Whether I will be able to resolve these changes at all before 10.2.7 hits the live servers or not I don't know.

I am working on my own UI using nUI as inspiration but it is still early days so unlikely to be even remotely finished before The War Within arrives. But it is the furthest I have got in a long while. Once it has at least some useability I will upload it as the new XrystalUI version for testing.

10.2.5 Version Uploaded

Although no errors spawned ( apart from those protected function ones that I still haven't figured out ) while doing regular stuff on the ptr for 10.2.5 I did catch some issues and new changes that needed changing.

There is a new AddonCompartmentButton attached to the calendar and followed it into the button bag, but still attached to the bottom of the calendar. So, gave it it's own allocation to the button bag. What the button does is allow users to choose which addons are accessible from this button. Whether addons have to *sign up* for access I don't know.

Although I didn't do a follower dungeon, the good news is that I can now test group setup now. And by default you have control of the dungeon so you can zone in and check UI set up before continuing. I did just that and received no errors or strange visuals ( although I did notice a party target and party pet bar rather than frame - which might be an issue if the frame doesn't appear when they target things ).

I will spend the first week or so play testing live and if I see anything I will make note, report and fix where needed. As per my normal process. But, please let me know ( via Curse preferably ) if there are any issues you are having. Some may be existing ones that I haven't been able to figure out yet ( see above ) or ones I knew about but forgot about as I don't really play much now if at all. Each expansion I hope my enjoyment is boosted but I hate the War part of Warcraft so I usually disappear after a short while due to combat weariness rofl.

nUI and 10.2

There is a 10.2 version on Curse under alpha version files.

https://legacy.curseforge.com/wow/ad.../files/4816802

It has a keybinding file adjustment to get them to appear in the options keybinding screen.

The main work however is a quick review and correction where needed of the players power bars. They have made some changes in this area in 10.2 and 10.0 in general had made some changes so decided now was the time to see what I could do to make sure things were kinda on track for when 10.2 is released.

There is a discussion thread on 10.2 in connection with nUI there as well - https://legacy.curseforge.com/wow/addons/nui/issues/192 - so feel free to post anything in that regards there. But if you can't for whatever reason, here is fine.

Latest Default nUI Edit Mode Layout ( 10.1.5 )

Steps:
Copy this text into memory
Enter Edit Mode
If you want to overwrite an existing layout you will have to delete it first.
You can delete by hovering over the layout in the drop down list and select the delete icon
From the Layout Drop Down box select Import
Paste the text into the box
Name it nUI Default ( or whatever you like ) and leave the Character Specific Layout box blank so it is available to all characters on the account.
Then click import.
The frames should rearrange if needed to the best approximate I could make for a default nUI Layout.

The edit mode system also allows you to copy a layout, so you can always create a default nUI layout and then copy it to see what you can tweak and keep tweaked

10.1.5 Version Coming Soon

I've just been clearing out my wow folders and reinstalling from scratch to ensure I have that new user experience.

The PTR version which was checked yesterday. Should work fine after the patch hits for the US, but I will double check as soon as I am able and make sure a version is uploaded here with notes on anything you might need to do and what issues you may still see that I haven't been able to fix yet, but there are work arounds for ( I've detailed those I found in the PTR version patch notes )

10.1.5 On PTR Test Results

I jumped on the PTR and managed to test nUI with the action bars back under its control. The EditMode error didn't occur.

The Objective Tracker and Micro Menu are still under Blizzard control however. The former because nUI doesn't do anything apart from allow you to move the frame - so .. Blizzard can do that. The MicroMenu however has had some changes done in 1.1.0 which are currently not compatible with nUI's version of the micro menu.

The first update (10.1.5.49516.0) for the future patch is being uploaded as we speak on
https://www.wowinterface.com/downloa...nt-Retail.html

Feeback appreciated and any bugs found ( if you can use curse for the bugs that would be great as they have an issue tracking system )

10.0.5 Update

When I logged in today I received the following errors on log in

nUI_MicroMenu.lua:88: hooksecurefunc(): UpdateMicroButtonsParent is not a function
> Fixed by removing MicroMenu from nUI Control - other alternatives were generating errors inside the Blizzard code

nUI_Minimap.lua:330: attempt to index field 'MailFrame' (a nil value)
> Fixed

Re: Changes coming to WOW 10.0.5

It appears they made some changes since my visit to the PTR and I am trying to rectify the errors I am coming across at log in as soon as I can.

As a reminder as to why I have been removing items from nUI's control. This is because Blizzard offers the same or similar management to the frame. And will mean one less thing to worry about when expansions hit and will allow people to use other addons for extra functionality for those addons. Less files being loaded means less memory in use, so will help with addon usage memory. I won't be removing the files from the folder yet though, just in case they need to come back. After all, who knows what they will throw at us over the next year.

Just to confirm I have got into the beta and have done a quick log in test to make sure that the current nUI version will still work. It does so far. I will do some more combat specific tests over the next few days to make sure nothing comes up.

Drakthyr related errors

I have hit at least one error after creating my Drakthyr. I will spend time on this before playing seriously on my character and then monitor as I play.

Update 10.0.0.46366.0 - NoHud Slash Command Added

Due to a request on curse, I have changed NoHud from a layout file to a toggle so that the Hud Selector button can be hidden too.

/nui hud nohud

This will toggle the hud display off or on depending on its current status. By default it is on ( nohud = false ).

I have also disconnected the button from the console area so that it is still accessible to switch huds if the console is hidden and vice versa.

Some possible additions to nUI

Based on feedback in that curse link I provided for discussion about nUI some concerns were made about certain areas of nUI and their use of certain addons that nUI may be interfering with in some way. The following was more response and considerations in that regard, just in case you don't visit curse often.

vvvvv Response from Curse post vvvvvvvv

Combat Log
Hmm, I can see where you are coming from in regards to the combat log being kept with the other chat frames. But seeing as nUI has always had the combat log as an infopanel many users are likely used to that functionality and are fine by it but .. a toggle to turn it off might be possible for people that don't want it as an infopanel.

Minimap
/nUI Minimap should cancel any nUI management of the minimap. This should allow any other minimap addon to do its work and use their own settings to keep the minimap working with nUI not touching it unless you turn it back on again. However, by default, nUI does manage the minimap and you have to turn it off. I can't remember if this is per character or account but when I tested it yesterday it turned off management fine. I'll have a look at that minimap addon (Basic Minimap) and assuming it is updated to the new expansion changes I'll check out the issues you are having with it.

Bagbar
The bag bar cannot be fully disconnected from nUI as the bar isn't movable by the new edit mode system and thus would be sitting underneath the nUI dashboard in the bottom right unreachable. nUI has it movable using /nui movers so you can place the bar where you want.

Minimap Button Bag
At the moment control of what buttons do and do not go to the button bag are hand coded in nUI_ButtonBag.lua in the plugins folder. One of the changes I was planning to make to this area was to see if I could make a settings screen for the minimap to allow more buttons to be placed around the minimap and better access to the user to decide which ones are important to them. It's possible this set of changes could include turning off the button bag system totally. Giving the user the choice to fully manage the buttons using a settings screen or the choice to not have nUI manage the buttons at all.

Button Forge
I will have to look into Button Forge. As, if you want to use Button Forge Panels as a switchable infopanel along with the likes of recount and omen etc. an infopanel has to be coded to specifically work with the addon in question. It might be that I can set up an integrated info panel for button forge users.

Hud Switcher Button
I didn't notice myself that it is tied to minimap buttons in nUI. I will see what I can do to separate that so that you can hide one and not the other as per your choice in that regards.

Focus Frame
In regards to the focus frame issue if you want to use the minimap area for something else or do not want the minimap swapped out if you have a focus. The question is where can the focus frame be put within the unit frames area. This is probably the reason why Scott initially used the minimap area as I don't think there is a space for it elsewhere and based on my own usage of focus during my old raiding days I needed the focus in view more than a minimap so unless I can find a spot for it in the unit frame setups ( solo, party,raidxx etc ) it might have to stay as it is and replace that minimap spot.

However, if it is possible to add it to the mover system without breaking its secure frame functionality so users can put it where they want it might be an option to consider.

Slash Commands
The slash commands system still has some changes to make as some have been disabled but not removed from the system. I need to double check these before fully removing them. Once Blizzard has got the new settings system running properly alongside addons I am hoping to add a settings screen for nUI's options and slash commands to make those changes easier and resulting in a single reload of the UI at the end rather than for each slash command that needs a reload to have its change apply.
