Petster  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 20100.00
by: Zuban [More]

Update: Unfortunately my WoW account is no longer active and as a result, I will not be able to maintain my addons. If an author is interested in picking up where I left off, they are welcome to. Thank-you to those who enjoyed using Petster and sorry for having to leave it behind.

Forum Thread

The successor to my previous Feed Pet Button addon.

Warning: This addon is no longer dependent on the ZubanLib addon. Please delete the ZubanLib folder from your addons (if it's still there) since it may cause conflicts with Petster.

Note: The Basic Feed Button addon is disabled by default. Go into the addons management during login to enable it.

A hunter button addon that can be configured to feed a particular food to your
pet when clicked. The button casts other spells when "Feed Pet" is not ready.

Other features:
Basic Feed Button: Simplified version of the main feed pet button that only
casts Feed Pet. The button hides when the pet is away. By default this addon
is disabled and can be enabled through the "Addons" menu during WoW startup.

Extended Pet Buttons: a set of regular action bar buttons that switch
based on the presence of your pet.

Available actions:
- casts "Call Pet" if pet is away
- casts "Mend Pet" if your or pet is in combat
- casts "Revive Pet" if targetting your pet's corpse or while holding SHIFT
- casts "Feed Pet" if pet is available and not in combat
- casts "Dismiss Pet" while holding ALT

To associate a food to a pet:
- Call your pet if it is away
- Drag the desired food from your bag onto the button
- Each pet family is mapped separately to it's own food so you may have to
repeat for each pet

Note: Since this is a class specific addon, it is disabled by default. Click
the "addon" button on startup and enable this for your hunter character(s).

DEPENDENCIES
The "Petster" addon is a library that the others depend on so it should always
be enabled. You may choose to enable or disable the other addons as needed.

I downloaded this for the continuation of petBar extend, nothing else.

I'm incredibly confused by how the bars work. There's no option to lock the buttons to either side of the current pet bar? And I don't understand the button slot ID thing, why can't i just drag the skills I want onto the bars like in the old version? I really liked how the old one had a couple buttons you could add to each side of the Blizzard petbar, which seems impossible now, only a string of buttons that can't be broken up, just spaced out. Also, there's no way to have them not spaced out when the pet's away, and then spaced out when it's active.

In conclusion, I'm glad that there's a reworking of PBextend, but it needs a lot of work to make it more intuitive, I really liked the old version.

@Myskaal

I have been using the 20000.01 version without any trouble. It is essentially the the original (hb_FeedPetButton) remade for v2.0.

I am also a big fan of the original and keeping things simple = D

Eh, going to jump on the bandwagon of "bring the original back" here. There's already plenty of other hunter specific mods that add all kinds of handy bars here and there and this and that and etc. and so on.

Hunter Bar Feed Pet button was the "only" one that added one simple button that was placable anywhere on your screen for a simple 1 click and feed your pet without having to take up a hotbar button or mess around with opening/closing bags to find the food.

It was perfect.

Now that one's gone, too.

Zuban... Don't listen to them. Your mods are not bloated, just flexible and I like them tons. Keep it up!

I for one keep your mods on my favorites list and look forward to each update. So far they are all working flawlessly for me and I have never had any issues.

When the new patch came out and it looked like you might not update the mods I was bummed and actually did find a macro to do the feeding with worked very well but as soon as I saw you had updated them I dumped that macro like a hot potatoe.

Anywho... just wanted to say something because sometimes I don't think people appreciate it enough all the time and work you and others put into these mods we are all so fond of using and in most cases couldn't live without.

Thanks and take care,
Twidget

OK thanks. I like the ability to drag the food. Right now I took the macro suggestion below and it works fine. Sometimes simple is better. I will look for the "feed only" version. I wish to change the size of the button, how please?

@Chasim, thanks for pointing that out. I should have made it more clear that "Petster" is now a library and there are now dependencies. It will now be indicated in a few separate places.

@Kolakhan, a simpler feed button is in the works. I'll call it Basic Feed Button or something to distinguish it from the current Call/Feed/Mend Button.

Doesn't work...

Installed 07 version and removed old saved variables and the Addon doesn't load at all... went back to 06 and got a .lua error... doesn't work.

Edit: The 07 version does work... I assumed there were three Addons - normal Petster, the basic feed pet button, and the pet bar, but there are only two. You have to have the Petster folder plus one other folder installed for it to work (I guess the .toc on Petster saying it was a library should have been a clue).

A simple macro?

Sorry guys if this does not have anything to do with what ya'll want, but...

/cast Feed Pet
/use Roasted Quail

That is all there is to it. No need to specify a slot or anything else. Just /use Item Name Here. Make a macro button and it works every time. No need for an addon that I can see.

Not to take away from this addon, as I'm sure there is lots of goodies in there people love.

hmm, i do understand your motives. and repackaging the .zip with seperate mods is an improvement but i still think its overweight. i'll stick to 20000.01 wich seems to work for me. i use venantes for all other pet & hunter stuff.

The feature bloat as some people see it is my attempt at merging my previous addons into a single project. For those who used all of my past addons, there's not really anything new. I get requests for each of my addons to be ported to 20000 so I'm not really just making changes for kicks.

So why did I try to merge them? I knew from working on my last generation of addons that splitting up a project adds extra complexities to the development process and mangement. Stuff like versioning and testing become harder to deal with. 20000 was my chance to try fix some of those issues. This would appear as feature bloat to some so I compensated with the option to disable a feature. With the ability to shut it off, I don't see how that infringes on other addons but I do see the issue of introducing instability. It's a balancing act.

However, I anticipated that I may need to fall back to separate projects so I wrote it with that in mind and hence version .07. As a single addon, there aren't a lot of benefits to the end-user and furthermore it's not fair to get bugs popping up in features that a person isn't using. However, I will still be releasing a single .zip file with a single versioning branch which should cut down some of the headache (so a new version may or may not have touched a particular addon but that shouldn't be a big problem).

I will be making certain breaking changes and potentially introducing bugs that I wouldn't normally do outside of hobby level coding. Playing around with a prototyping/multi-paradigm language like Lua is part of my motivation.

Thanks for the feedback. They've certainly been helpful.

Every time I hit the button to feed pet I get an error message

Every time i hit the feed pet button i get an error pop up that says something about one of my mods doing something that the WoW interface should be doing. If i hit disable i get the same message next time, and then next time, etc.
Is there a fix for this, and also i am running ag unit frames how do i show my pets happyness in the unit frame. Thanx.
Also i agree with Phurion and the others, Simple is Better.

Gonna have to agree with a few others on this one. The old functionality did exactly what I needed, nothing more, and didn't infringe on my other bar mods functionality.

Consider this a plea from one of your original users from "waaaaaay back when" who's played a Hunter since they were first introduced in beta. I used FeedPetButton until the 2.0 patch (kept looking for updates, or just updating the TOC myself and hoped it worked). Please, please, PLEASE release a "light" version that only has the feed/mend/call/revive functionality? I'm going back to v20000.01 which seemed to be the most stable for my needs for the time being.

I have bar mods to do the other things. No need in "reinventing the wheel". Change can be good, but change just for the sake of change is never a good thing. You may also need to consider that the "light" version (20000.03b) may have been "as good as it gets" when it comes to functionality. Many seem to think it was the cream of the crop with that level of functionality (save a couple of confirmed bugs that you could fix). If that's the case, then maybe you should freeze the code, cease further functionality development, and put it in "bug fix only" status. Then you would be free to explore development of a bar mod and only need to update Petster to be compatible with new patches as they are released.

I'll cross my fingers and hope you hear your fans requests. If Petster continues in the direction it's currently going I'll have to look for another mod again. I had switched to Fizzwidgets Feed-O-Matic after the 2.0 patch, but switched back to your mod the day I saw you had updated and re-released it. For what it does (and what I need), it was the best mod available. While Feed-O-Matic isn't as functional as Petster (even in the 20000.03b and before versions), I'll have to switch back to it.

Just an opinion. Value it what you paid for it.

please give us back the addon we all know and love; a button that feeds our pets, nothing more! (perhaps also give back the possibility to autohide the button when there is no pet around)

Maybe it's an idea to make the Addon modulair?. Put PetsterExtended in it's own directory so people have a choice between installing just the Petfeed button or both.

I also have no need for all the bar options that came with the new version. The old changes to the button itself where great, meaning the heal and call pet options, but the new bar stuff doesn't make sense to me.
