Grid  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.1.1
by: Phanx [More]

Grid has been continued as Plexus by Doadin. Use that instead; Grid has not been updated since 2018 and will not be updated in the future.

Grid is a compact and highly configurable party/raid unit frame addon.
The compact grid of unit frames lets you select a group member quickly, while keeping a good overview of the whole group. It shows as much information as possible without overloading you. It allows you to customize what information you see, and how you see it. It works in both party and raid groups, and supports pets and vehicles.

Want more features? The Grid core tries to include only features which are generally useful for all classes and roles, but makes it easy to add new features with a simple plugin API for developers. Over 75 third-party plugins are already available!

Type “/grid” for options, or right-click the minimap button, DataBroker launcher, or Grid frame tab.

Language Support
Grid is compatible with all World of Warcraft localizations. It is currently translated into English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Português, Русский, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文.

To add or update translations for any language, enter them on the WowAce project page. New and updated translations will be automatically included in the next version of Grid!

HINT: The WowAce interface for adding translations is quite cumbersome. To make the process easier, you can use the Export function on WowAce, copy the exported data into your text editor, fill in your translations, and then paste them back into WowAce using the Import function.
Credits
Grid was originally conceived and written by Maia and Pastamancer in late 2006. Phanx has been the primary developer since late 2009. Jerry wrote the original pet support code. Mikk designed the icon. jlam added some advanced options for auras. Greltok has helped a lot with bugfixing. Finally, lots of people have contributed translations!

No. Grid relies on Blizzard's secure templating system, which does not provide a way to generate fake frames. Working around this limitation would require a significant amount of code duplication, and really is not worth the bloat. If there is something you really can't configure with only one frame (or two if you're a pet class) while solo, set it up while your raid is forming, or go idle in AV for a few minutes.

And finally, what about enemy raid frames for arena? Are they supported?
No; why would they be? Grid is a party/raid frame addon; it doesn't, never has, and never will provide frames for units outside of your group, such as target, focus, arena enemies, or bosses.

Testing Option

Is there a way to test Grid's settings without being in a party / raid / battleground raid / arena raid? A module or something that could be used to create a virtual group to test grid's settings on?

And finally, what about enemy raid frames for arena? Are they supported?

Thanks in advance!

As this isn't critical information that helps you make realtime decisions, it isn't included in the core Grid addon. However, there is a plugin that can adds this type of information: GridStatusParty

Yes, the same way you add any other buff or debuff:
  1. Status > Auras > Add new buff > Type "Earth Shield" and press Enter.
  2. Frame > Bottom Right Corner (or any other indicator) > Check "Buff: Earth Shield".

As a resto shaman, it would be really handy to see where other Earth Shields are and when they have expired (used up their charges).

Thanks for this add-on, it really makes playing a healer much more enjoyable.

Create your own layout, or edit one of the existing ones.

Is there a way to get grid to display the raid in one long line? For instance, the 5 man group grid is one line, but can you do that with a 25 man raid?

2) Define a width/height and have Grid fit all the units in that space, preferably with a maximum size defined so if there's just a few units they aren't ginormous.
Not possible, and never will be, in the core addon. It would require not only calculating the height/width of each unit frame, but adjusting several other secure layout attributes as well, and making sure that all of this was only done outside of combat, because secure attributes cannot be changed by addons while you're in combat. You could write a plugin that would do this, or you could set up different profiles with different unit heights/widths for different raid sizes and switch between them (either manually, or automatically with a plugin).

3) Have pets be visibile units but clearly identified and preferably off to the side so I can ignore them if I want.
You could set pets to use the "fallback" color instead of their owner's class color. The default fallback color for friendly units is a medium green that's distinct from any class colors, and is configurable.

... Grid(2) seems to be the best alternative.
I'm sure you already know, but just to make sure, Grid2 is a totally separate addon from Grid2, and is developed/supported by a totally separate group of people. However, the above answers apply equally to both addons, though the specific instructions may differ slightly.

I've messed around with both Grid and Grid2 a bit, but I'm trying to achieve certain functions and am curious if either Grid (or preferably Grid2) can achieve all of these before I sink a ton of time:

1) Border highlighting for debuffs that can be cured (pretty sure both can do this).

2) Define a width/height and have Grid fit all the units in that space, preferably with a maximum size defined so if there's just a few units they aren't ginormous.

3) Have pets be visibile units but clearly identified and preferably off to the side so I can ignore them if I want.

Ideally I'd like to creat two blocks (I generally have groups 6-8 in a block by themselves because they're so seldomly used), but I understand that can't be done.

Also, I don't expect a walkthrough on how to do this stuff. I'm just curious if either or both can achieve these effects and then I'll sink the time into doing all the learning/configuring. Right now I'm using Pitbull4, which I love, but I just find the CPU tax to be a little high in a raid and Grid(2) seems to be the best alternative. Thanks.

Ah ha! I had made the faulty assumption that maxColumns was in reference to the raid group as a whole, and not a property if isPetGroup while briefly skimming over the layouts before posting. This is exactly what I needed, and the timely response at this hour is greatly appreciated.

Is there a method to either A) filter out a certain classes pets from displaying (I generally don't worry too much about DK ghouls in raids given their short CD) or, B) cap the number of pets displayed at an even 5?
