Curiosity

I'm not that knowledgeable on authors and which site is the main hub of the authors and what not. I assume that all the mods on wowinterface and curse are updated by the same people. But recently i'm noticing that not all the mods i'm using have been updated on wowinterface, so i had to use the version on curse instead.

So i'm wondering if anyone knows why some mods will be updated on curse but not wowinterface? I'd like to stick with just using wowinterface, but i'm thinking i'm going to have to keep comparing the two every time i update my mods.

It really depends on which site authors consider their "home" site. I consider WoWI my home site, others consider Curse as theirs. Typically, if it is an Ace addon, Curse would be the main site. But not always true

It is really author preference and there is no sure-fire way to tell other than asking the authors of the addons you use

It's down to author preference. Some authors prefer only to upload to one site. It does save them time, in particular when comes to dealing with support issues. Sometimes you will find an older version on another site, either the author had uploaded at one time in the past or it was uploaded by another user.

EDIT: It appears that Maul and I were posting at the same time

To expand on what Maul said about wowace/curse... If an author uses the WowAce or CurseForge development sites to develop their addons, any time they mark a version of their code as beta or release, it gets pushed to their Curse page automatically. But they might wish to only manually put release versions here.

As said, it's all up to the individual author. In the case of the above, however, you only need the release versions.

It's mostly a technical issue plus an issue of convenience. Some of the authors choose Curse as a place to "actively" update their addons, would be more precise to say actually WoWAce, because they feel comfortable with the version control system and the packager there. Others prefer WoWI's Subversion repository since the packaging procedure is a bit more simplified. Usually, if you pick one, you stick with the supporting site, since this makes it also easier to track down bugs, feature requests, comments and whatnot. Updating on multiple sites requires more administrative effort on behalf of the author, which sometimes takes time away from actual development. That and the simple fact that some of us are just lazy b*stards

Edit : *Sigh* at all of us posting the same thing, at almost the exact same time

In addition to everything those guys all posted at the same time ... while it's not necessarily as convenient, you can actually fairly easily keep track of which site has the more recent version of your mod(s):
On WoWInterface (I don't know about Curse, but I'm sure it's something similar, same with wowui.incgamers), when you go to the download page of an AddOn you use and like, you can click on the little heart underneath the big download button. That adds it to your favourites list. Now every time you visit the site, you will see a notice on the front page (Community tab) saying whether any of your favourites have been updated. As well, there is a link on the top bar of the site that says "favourites", that you can click at any time to go look at your list.

To get email notifications of updates of your favourites, do this:

If you are on your Favourites list page you will see a little menu on the left, or if you are on any other page on the site (except the forums tab) you can click on "Options" on the top bar. Either one of those places you will see:

AddOn Options
Manage Favorites
Email Feeds
Preferences
Download History

Click on "Preferences". You will then see this:

Download Preferences
My Favorites Options
Email Notification:
Enable this feature to recive email notification when one of your favorites has been updated.
yes no

Just check "yes" and any time any AddOn on your favourites list is updated, it will send out an email notification that it has been updated and give you a direct link to the download page for that AddOn.
Hope that helps.

Well, I guess it's better than the standard "You have reached level blah-blah"

Extremely off topic but it noticed it and had to share it. Anyone else see the humor of a thread named curiosity made by someone named paranoia? Maybe it just me bit the combo gave me a little giggle.

Please resume you normal thread. Nothing more to see here.
